Social distancing, while undoubtedly necessary in the era of COVID-19, can be lonely and isolating — especially after an entire year. But this strange time has undoubtedly created the opportunity to do things you’ve long put off. Whether it’s honing in on a creative project or renovating your space, being stuck inside comes with possibilities. It can also be a time to take a beauty plunge you’ve long been putting off — like finally switching to natural deodorant.
Many people want to make the switch to natural deodorant, but put it off because of the dreaded detoxifying phase. During this phase of the swap, which can last up to a month, your armpits can sweat and smell more than usual.
“The function of aluminum in conventional deodorant-antiperspirant formulas is to essentially plug your sweat glands, which in turn keeps you dry,” Nadia Musavvir, N.D., a naturopathic doctor who specializes in skin health, told Glamour. “When you remove the ‘plug’ of aluminum, you begin releasing what you had been blocking off, which contributes to that brief B.O.”
But after this phase, many people say they sweat less with natural deodorant than with aluminum-based deodorant — and smell less. So it may all be worth it in the end. And if you can make the swap while hanging out at home, why not go for it?
If you want to make the switch to natural deodorant, now may be the time. Try these top brands to start your natural deodorant journey.
