The post-lockdown beauty treatments we’re all rushing to book

Beauty bookings service Treatwell reported a 432% spike in bookings after salons were given a tentative reopening date for 12 April.

Beauty and hair salons are set to reopen in less than a month.

After 12 months of seeing beauty businesses forced to close with every lockdown, Boris Johnson finally announced that they’ll be able to reopen on 12 April at the earliest. And unsurprisingly, the news led to a (virtual) stampede.

Within 24 hours of the Prime Minister’s announcement on 22 February, beauty bookings service Treatwell saw a huge 432% spike in bookings. But some beauty treatments proved to be significantly more popular than others.

According to Treatwell, hair appointments reigned supreme, representing 47% of bookings. Predictably, haircuts were the most popular type of hair bookings, with many of us desperate for a chop.

This was swiftly followed by hair colour appointments, which included a steep peak for a full head of highlights and a significant increase in balayage.

Next up on the list were face treatments and hair removal, taking up 18% of post-lockdown bookings each.

While ‘regular facials’ are the most popular type of face treatment – undoubtedly spurred by the effects of face masks and lockdown stress – there has also been a rise in interest surrounding microdermabrasion and acne treatments. As for waxing, bookings for a Hollywood wax has proven to be the most popular option.

Nail treatments, particularly two-week manicures like shellac, accounted for 9% of bookings, while massages took up 8%, signalling a rise in our attention to self-care. Let’s hope that continues.

The beauty trends to try when salons reopen

Already have your post-lockdown treatment booked but in need of some inspiration? We’ve rounded up this spring/summer’s biggest trends:

  • Haircuts

Researching the right haircut deserves time and attention but there’s one that crops (sorry) up time and time again: bobs. In 2020, bobs were crowned the world’s most popular haircut after Google data revealed it gets a mammoth 222,580 average monthly searches – with French bobs specifically topping the list. And the trend is set to continue this year, with Jameela Jamil, Alexa Chung, Nicola Coughlan, Penelope Cruz and Uzo Aduba all sporting the hairstyle in 2021.

  • Manicures

In the absence of nail appointments, Instagram Saved folders slowly filled up with images of dreamy manicures. But now that bookings are open, what to get? French manicures are making a huge comeback, but this time with a twist, as many opt for black tips instead of classic white. There’s also trendy tortoise shell, ombre and sunshine yellow nails.

  • Hair colouring

A full head of highlights and balayage have proven to be the most popular types of hair colour appointments – but which colours should you go for? Gigi Hadid and Sarah Hyland have both thrown their support behind fiery red, while bronde and chalky pastels are also climbing the ranks.

  • Facials

From skin icing, microdermabrasion and dermaplaning to LED gadgets, acupuncture and pore vacuums, there’s a wide range of facial treatments to choose from. Instead of following the latest trend, consider the face treatment that is best suited to your skin type and its needs. And if you feel like you’re holding a lot of tension in your jaw, forehead and along your eyebrows, consider adding on a facial massage, too.
