Winter’s coming – here are 15 fragrances to consider before it arrives

Ever noticed that your favourite perfumes smell alike? You’re not alone. Despite the fact that there are potentially limitless combinations of olfactory notes out there, many of us are drawn to the same types of fragrance again and again. (It’s why brands launch updated versions of their bestselling scents every year – they’ve got an existing fan base.) Without realising it, you might have got yourself a go-to fragrance family.

To that end, we’ve pulled together the latest and greatest for each scent category this season. Like florals? We’ve got you covered. A fan of gourmands? You too. Keep reading for the fragrance launches to know now.

If you like FLORALS

Popular for good reason, this versatile fragrance family runs the gamut from wholesome to straight-up sultry. For the former, choose a fruity blend. Want spray-on sex appeal? Go with something spicy.

Then you’ll love:

Jo Malone Sea Daffodil Cologne, $151 (50mL). Inspired by the fragrant daffodils found along the coast of southern Italy, it smells like sunshine and sea breeze. Ylang ylang and vanilla add sweetness.

Gucci Bloom EDT, $98 (30mL). A refreshing fruity-floral you can spritz generously, it’s all about white flowers (tuberose, jasmine, orange blossom) and bright citrus (lemon, bergamot and mandarin).

Viktor&Rolf Flowerbomb EDP, $112 (30mL). The name says it all – it’s an explosion of blooms. Centred around classic florals (freesia, rose, jasmine and orange blossom), the dry down lasts on skin all day.

If you like GOURMANDS

If you love baked goods, this fragrance family will be just what your sweet tooth ordered. Ingredient lists read like a dessert menu with notes of vanilla, buttery caramel, chocolate and praline all on offer.

Then you’ll love:

Glasshouse A Tahaa Affair Devotion EDP, $139 (100mL). Inspired by an island sojourn, this alluring scent layers butterscotch with white florals, sandalwood, coconut water and a sea accord.

Creed Wind Flowers EDP, $469 (75mL). Fresh and fruity with lots of sparkle – it’s peach and orange sorbet topped with fizzy champagne. Jasmine, rose, and praline keeps things soft and sumptuous.

Lancôme La Vie Est Belle EDP, $112 (30mL). Built on a sweet “fine delicacies” accord, this is what happens when gourmand meets a fruity floral. It also spotlights pear, blackberry, iris and jasmine.

If you like WOODY

Rich and sophisticated, this fragrance family is all about luxury. Scents are dominated by warm woods like cedar, oud and sandalwood, with earthy accents of aromatics, leather and spice in the mix.

Tom Ford Ébène Fumé EDP, $360 (50mL). Aromatic and smoky in the best way, with rose for wearability. There’s a dry note you can’t put your finger on – papyrus – which dials up the elegance.

Trudon Aphelie EDP, $299 (100mL). Named for the point at which a celestial body in orbit is farthest from the sun, this otherworldly spritz is equal parts rose, blackcurrant bud and sandalwood.

Le Labo Santal 33 EDP, $296 (50mL). This intoxicating blend of woods, leather, cardamon and iris is a cult classic. Not for wallflowers, it makes a statement – people will ask what you’re wearing.
