Britney Spears and Jamie Lynn feud timeline: From Instagram barbs to the memoir

Britney Spears and her sister Jamie Lynn Spears’ relationship appears to have broken down over recent years, after the pair appeared close when they were younger.

With the pair increasingly engaging in public messages to and about one another on social media, things appear to have reached a head in 2022.

Their latest back-and-forth comes since Jamie Lynn, 30, has been taking part in interviews to promote her memoir, Things I Should Have Said, which Britney, 40, has objected to.

While Jamie Lynn has insisted she has nothing but love and support for her older sister, Britney has refuted some of the claims made in the book.

Here is everything that has gone on since Britney and Jamie Lynn’s apparent falling out.

Britney Spears and Jamie Lynn Spears’ feud

One bone of contention between the pair has been Jamie Lynn singing Britney’s songs at a Radio Disney Music Awards tribute in 2017.

While Britney stayed quiet about it at the time, she later claimed that Jamie Lynn was given the remixes to her songs to sing while she was banned from doing the same.

She first called it out in July 2021, telling fans: ‘I don’t like that my sister showed up at an awards show and performed MY SONGS to remixes!!!!!’

Jamie Lynn was reportedly named a trustee of a part of Britney’s estate in 2018, revealed in court documents obtained by The Blast in August 2020.

The SJB Revocable Trust was set up in 2004 to protect Britney’s financial assets for her children, with Jamie Lynn reportedly being made responsible in 2018 for distributing funds from it to Britney’s sons in the event of her death, according to reports from the Los Angeles Times.

Jamie Lynn denied any knowledge of this in an interview in January 2022, telling Good Morning America: ‘There was no, like, me overseeing funds or something like that, and if there was, that was a misunderstanding. But either way, I took no steps to be a part of it.’

The Free Britney movement first reached mainstream attention in 2019 after the Britney’s Gram podcast released audio from an anonymous source claiming to be a former paralegal involved with her conservatorship case, alleging that Britney had been forced to check into a mental health facility.

After the voicemail was shared, Jamie Lynn appeared to hit back at the movement, writing at the time: ‘10 years ago, who was there? I have been here long before anyone else and I’ll be here long after.

‘I love my sister with everything I have. So anyone or anything that speaks to the contrary can GTFOH with all the comments about what you don’t understand.’

Jamie Lynn took to social media to criticise the media for its treatment of her sister in the past, without naming her, after the documentary Framing Britney Spears aired on Hulu.

She then shared a further post to confirm she was not in attendance at a Free Britney rally, adding: ‘A few media outlets ran a false story about me attending a virtual rally yesterday.

‘In fact, someone represented themselves as me without my knowledge. I love my sister very much, but I was not aware of the rally, nor was I in attendance for the virtual rally.’

Speaking to the court at her conservatorship hearing, Britney revealed that she wanted to sue her family for her treatment during her conservatorship.

The singer did not name any specific family members, but told the court: ‘I would honestly like to sue my family, to be totally honest with you.

‘I also would like to be able to share my story with the world, and what they did to me, instead of it being a hush-hush secret to benefit all of them.’

Days after Britney spoke to the court, Jamie Lynn posted her own message in response to her testimony.

She wrote: ‘Since the day I was born, I’ve only loved, adored, and supported my sister. I mean, this is my freaking big sister, before any of this bulls**t.

‘I don’t care if she wants to run away to a rainforest and have a zillion babies in the middle of nowhere, or if she wants to come back and dominate the world the way she has done so many times before, because I have nothing to gain or lose either way.’

The message came after Britney’s fans had criticised Jamie Lynn for staying silent on the subject of the conservatorship, having not publicly backed the Free Britney movement.

She responded that she hadn’t spoken about it sooner to give Britney the chance to ‘speak for herself’ first.

After revealing she and her children had received death threats, Jamie Lynn then reposted an article distancing herself from the conservatorship.

Jamie Lynn reportedly posted a screenshot of a news story titled ‘Britney Spears’ sister Jamie Lynn shares photos of her home life…after it’s revealed she is the ONLY family member not on the singer’s payroll’ on her Instagram story, adding: ‘Facts…now leave my broke a** alone.’

It came after Britney’s father, Jamie Spears, was reported to be receiving $16,000 (£12,000) of her money per month for his role as conservator for the past 12 years.

Things appeared to be cordial in July last year after Jamie Lynn posted about receiving gifts for her daughters from Britney.

Posting a box of stuffed toys, Jamie Lynn tag Britney as she wrote: ‘nothing sweeter than coming home to a box full of goodies for my girls from their auntie.’

Just days after the box of gifts, Britney posted then deleted a rant aimed at the people ‘closest to’ her for letting her down.

While she did not name anyone specifically, it came a day after Britney and Jamie Lynn appeared to celebrate Britney being allowed to choose her own legal representation in court.

She wrote: ‘How dare you make it public that NOW you CARE … did you put your hand out when I was drowning ???? Again … NO.

‘If you’re gonna post something …. Please stop with the righteous approach when you’re so far from righteous it’s not even funny.’

Britney hit out at her ‘so-called support system’ in another public rant, writing that she had ‘begged’ for years to be allowed to perform remixes but had been blocked, adding: ‘I don’t like that my sister showed up at an awards show and performed MY SONGS to remixes!!!!!’

After Jamie Lynn posted an Instagram photo with the caption ‘May the peace of the Lord be with you, and your spirit,’ Britney posted one of her own, captioned: ‘May the Lord wrap your mean a** up in joy today.’

Jamie Lynn announced that she would be releasing a book, Things I Should Have Said, which is met with criticism from Britney.

It was claimed that the book was initially called I Must Confess, which was a reference to Britney’s hit Baby One More Time, however Jamie Lynn later refuted this claim, alleging that the book had no official title at this stage.

After Britney’s father, Jamie Spears, was removed as conservator in September, the entire conservatorship rule was removed in November, meaning Britney was a free woman with control over her personal and financial decisions for the first time in over 13 years.

Britney appeared to unfollow her sister at the start of the year, with the Toxic star currently following less than 50 people on the platform.

Jamie Lynn appeared on Good Morning America to discuss her book as well as the apparent rift with Britney.

Speaking about their relationship, Jamie Lynn revealed: ‘The love is still there, 100 percent. I love my sister. I’ve only ever loved and supported her and done what’s right by her.

‘And she knows that, so I don’t know why we’re in this position right now.’

Jamie Lynn also claimed that she did try to help Britney get the resources she needed during her conservatorship and was happy when it was removed last year.

She explained: ‘I’ve always been my sister’s biggest supporter, so when she needed help I set up ways to do so.

‘I went out of my way to make sure that she had the contacts she needed to possibly go ahead and end this conservatorship and just end this all for our family. If it’s going to cause this much discord, why continue it?

‘It wasn’t about agreeing [or disagreeing] with the conservatorship. Everyone has a voice and it should be heard, so if she wanted to talk to other people, then I did, I set that up.’

Britney called her sister out by name on social media after Jamie Lynn claimed in her book that Britney once pulled out a knife and locked the two in a room.

Denying the account, Britney wrote: ‘Jamie Lynn… congrats babe! You’ve stooped to a whole new level of LOW … I’ve never been around you ever with a knife or would I ever even think to do such!!!

‘The only knife I ever saw you with at home was cutting the biggest pieces of squash I ever saw in my life and it was way too big for me to cut.

‘So please please stop with these crazy lies for the Hollywood books!!! NOW and only NOW I do know only a scum person would make up such things about someone….

‘I’m actually very confused about you making that up because it’s honestly not like you at all!!!! Around the kids???? Jamie Lynn, seriously??? Come on !!! Congrats on introducing your older sister the concept of getting LOW … LOWER … LOWEST … because you win on that one, babe!!!!’

Britney appeared to have softened just days later, writing: ‘Jamie Lynn… I don’t think your book is about me at all… I said some harsh things because you obviously hurt me by the things you are making up about me!!’

She later continued: ‘All I know is I love you unconditionally!!! So go ahead and say whatever you want… it’s so tacky for a family to fight publicly like this!!! You say you love me… yet your loyalty is still with the people that hurt me the most!!!

‘I think the thing that saddens me the most is that when this all happened to me and when I called you from that place… you would take days to respond!!! I never got to talk to you!!! You would just text me days later and I was so scared.

‘I needed you… my family, my blood and your support more than anything!!! You guys did absolutely nothing UNTIL a year ago!!!’

She added: ‘I don’t care anymore!!! Say whatever you want to say just know I do know your real heart more than anyone!!! It’s your life and you deserve a beautiful life!!!!

‘I wish I would be able to do what you’re doing and do interviews!!! I’m scared of all of it… I admire you for being strong… just know I love you and I think you know that already more than anything!’

Jamie Lynn appeared in a teaser for her interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, in which she is seen pulling up a text message from Britney in an attempt to clear her name.

She is seen asking for her phone before casting her eyes across the screen, responging: ’She says to me,’ but the contents of the alleged message have yet to be revealed as the screen goes black. The rest of the podcast is yet to be shared.

Speaking in response to comments Jamie Lynn made about Britney’s split from Justin Timberlake in her recent interviews, Britney had some harsh words back.

She wrote on Instagram: ‘I flew home to Jamie Lynn on the couch watching her tv shows right after Justin and I broke up… I was a ghost there!!!!!

‘I had worked my whole life and I didn’t know how to be served by Mamma … Sit there and get served the chocolate milkshakes with the perfectly crushed ice with the secret chunky sugar meanwhile Jamie Lynn is 12, she indulges with the TV for hours then goes to lay out on a raft at the pool … I’m in shock because this was never my life!!!!

‘Justin’s family was all I knew for many years … Things were different now and Jamie Lynn had a new Nickelodeon show… All I remember saying was “DAMN !!! How the hell does a 12 year old land a Nickelodeon show????” ….. HMMMMMMMM …. Well I never got my iced chocolate drink!!!

‘I mean yeah … I’m grown up right??? But then maybe I might need a little support … It was a People Magazine cover … The people show up and as Jamie Lynn says, I was scared!!!! F**k yeah!!!

‘My Mamma was on pain medication and could barely hold a conversation in the house because her and my dad split and she was more messed up than anything!!!! I remember her sitting on the floor in a conversation and she never got up…

‘And I’m sorry Jamie Lynn, I wasn’t strong enough to do what should have been done … slapped you and Mamma right across your f**king faces!!!!!’
