On Feb. 20, 2019, a Chicago grand jury indicted “Empire” star Jussie Smollett for a felony — filing a false police report — after investigators determined he repeatedly lied about being the victim of a homophobic and racist attack that occurred on Jan. 29, 2019, near his Chicago apartment building. The actor, who insisted he was innocent, turned himself into police two days later and he posed for this booking photo. Another 16 felony counts followed that March. Though cops continued to believe that brothers Ola and Abel Osundairo perpetrated the attack at Jussie’s behest, later in March, the entire case was dismissed in a surprise move by the Cook County State Attorney’s office — a controversial decision that pitted public officials against each other. But in 2021, it all came back to haunt him and Jussie was convicted on five felony counts of disorderly conduct for making false police reports after faking a hate crime against himself in 2019. In March 2022, he was sentenced to 150 days in jail and 30 months of felony probation and ordered to pay nearly $150,000 in fines and restitution.
