Google has honoured Superman actor and disability activist Christopher Reeve today on what would be his 69th birthday. Born Christopher D’Olier Reeve, the actor portrayed Superman in 1978 and 1980, and later suffered a horrible accident while horse riding, leaving him paralysed.

While taking part in an equestrian competition, Mr Reeve was thrown from his horse.

The accident results in him being paralysed from the shoulders down and requiring a ventilator for the rest of his life.

Reeve did return to film, directing the In the Gloaming (1997) and starring in the TV remake of Rear Window (1998).

Before the accident, Reeve was known for declining larger roles instead of appearing in a smattering of films and plays with more complex characters.

Reeve was close to actress Katharine Hepburn, after meeting during his audition for the Broadway play A Matter of Gravity.

Of Reeve, Hepburn said: “You’re going to be a big star, Christopher, and support me in my old age.”

He replied: “I can’t wait that long.”

Some media sources reported rumours of a relationship between the two, however, Reeve said it was more of a family relationship.

Reeve said: “She was sixty-seven and I was twenty-two, but I thought that was quite an honour … I believe I was fairly close to what a child or grandchild might have been to her.”

What is a Google Doodle?

Google Doodles are changes to the traditional Google logos which reflect holidays, anniversaries and the lives of famous faces.

If you visit Google you’ll see Christopher Reeve’s face with the New York skyline in the background.

Reeve is sat in his wheelchair, with clouds spelling out ‘Google’.
