Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd, who plays David Platt on the ITV soap, took to his Instagram and let slip a secret. The Weatherfield actor, who joined the cast in 2000 at the age of 12, shared a photo from the set of the programme.

After spending many years in the famous street’s number 8 with mum Gail and sister Sarah, and now his own family including son Max, daughter Lily and wife Shona, the David Platt actor chose to take fans down memory lane.

Taking to Instagram, Jack, 34, shared a photo from his on-screen home.

The soap star sat at the top of the stairs but the picture caused controversy among fans as they spotted something they had not seen before.

The stairs lead to nowhere and all that could be seen above was professional lighting as part of the soap’s equipment and a walk way which appeared to go above the rest of the Platt residence set.

In view of his 389,000 followers, he captioned the post: “Misspent youth was had on thus staircase.”

Many fans will recall the time David pushed his mum Gail, played by Corrie legend Helen Worth down the stairs.

Paddy Bever, who plays Jack’s on-screen son Max, was among the first to respond, writing: “Fuming. Just found out there’s no upstairs.”

While Jamie Kenna, who recently exited the soap as Fiz Stape’s ditched husband Phill Whittaker, commented: “WTF the house not real?!?!”

EastEnders star Adam Woodyatt, who is famed for playing the BBC soap’s Ian Beale replied: “Yep. #ifyouknowyouknow.”

Fans also addressed the picture, as @thedwwhitehouse commented: “I remember when you threw your Mum down those stairs.”

@dawsonstevie said: “POV Gail Platt having been shoved down said staircase.”

@salbearhinds shared: “Why did I think they were actual, real houses…. ruined it now!”

@li_sham83 said: “Now you’ve spoilt the illusion!” while @alanrisk1 laughed: “Haha trade secrets. Naughty.”

@gallaghersharlene replied: “This is up there with the disappointment I felt when I found out the washing machines in the laundrette in Eastenders aren’t real, and someone actually stands behind the wall manually turning them round.”

Fans also addressed something else about the house on the cobbles as they suggested the decor required updating.

@michelleford79 wrote: “Two questions, when do you think they will ever redecorate the houses and how many bedrooms are there?”

@mandynanaof7 said: “Just wish they would update the decor !!! Jesus how old is the washing machine!!!!”

Coronation Street airs tonight on ITV at 8pm.
