Dan Walker took to social media last night to pay tribute to Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, who died yesterday at the age of 99. The Football Focus host recalled a meeting with the Duke of Edinburgh, hours after Buckingham Palace announced the news.

“I’ve read some lovely tributes to the Duke Of Edinburgh today.

“I had the pleasure of meeting him once at St James’ Palace,” he wrote on Instagram, in view of his 176,000 followers.

Dan went on to recall his encounter with the royal.

“It was a Thursday and Steve Bruce had just pulled out of Football Focus that weekend,” the 44-year-old began.

“The Duke asked me what I did. I explained and asked him if he fancied coming on the show on Saturday as we had a spare seat on the sofa.

“He politely declined.

“What a life he lived. It must be such a difficult day for the Queen and the rest of the royal family.”

“May he rest in peace,” he continued.

Many took to the comments section of his post to share their thoughts.

“Lovely words and memories,” one social media user wrote online.

“Great story,” another added.

“He demonstrated that age was more in the mind than the body. An inspirational man on so many levels,” a third remarked.

A fourth penned: “I’ve watched all day and I can’t begin to know how the Queen feels. 73 years by her side. He was our Prince.”

The Duke of Edinburgh died at Windsor Castle yesterday morning.

A statement from the palace read: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband.

“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”

“The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”

Last night, Dan informed Football Focus fans that the programme would air on BBC2 at midday today, instead of it’s usual spot on BBC One.

A BBC News special following the death of the Duke will take its place.

Earlier this week, Dan announced that he would be leaving the popular sport show, which he has presented since 2009, at the end of the season.

He said it had been a “real pleasure” to host and an “amazing 12 years,” when he announced his departure on social media on Thursday.
