Delia Smith celebrates her 80th birthday today. The TV chef will mark the milestone with her husband Micheal Wynn-Jones however is unlikely to head to a restaurant, after previously saying that the joy of eating out had gone.

Delia made her comments back in 2017 after being made a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour for services to cookery.

At the time, she said it was hard to find a good restaurant.

“If I get one more plate put in front of me with six dots of sauce on it, I will go mad,” she said, following the Buckingham Palace event.

She went on to say that cooking had become “very chefy”.

“The joy, years ago, of going to a really special restaurant and having a really special meal, has gone.

“It is very hard to find one that isn’t trying to be theatre on a plate.”

“I don’t like it at all,” she continued.

Delia said too much emphasis was placed on the appearance of food rather than concentrating on the flavours and ingredients.

“Cooking has become very poncey, very chefy,” the TV star added.

Delia became a household name in the 1970s, after fronting her own cookery show called Family Fare.

The programme ran for two years until 1975.

She went on to appear in several television shows and released a number of cook books in the years that followed.

In 1995 her book – The Winter Collection – sold over two million copies and was one of the top five best-selling books of the decade.

The cook announced her retirement from television cookery shows in 2013, but continues to offer online recipes.

In addition to her TV appearances and cooking expertise, Delia is well known for her love of football, in particular Norwich City.

She and her husband are majority shareholders in the club.

The cook went on to launch her own restaurant at Carrow Road Stadium, the home of her beloved team.

Three-course meals are said to be served to the “exacting standards” of Delia at the eatery.

Earlier this year, the shareholder met Norwich City fans who were celebrating the club’s promotion.

The team secured a return to the Premier League after winning the 2020-21 EFL Championship.

“Thank you, thank you so much for all your wonderful support. You deserve this, you deserve it,” she said.
