Denise Van Outen talks ‘worst part’ of Masked Singer UK and spills on Harlequin’s identity

The Masked Singer: Harlequin performs ‘Falling’

Denise Van Outen, 46, took part on The Masked Singer UK last year and was unveiled as the Fox. Reflecting on her time on the show, she said she struggled to sing behind her outfit. The show’s hidden celebrities perform in elaborate costumes which covers their identity from head to toe.

Their voices are also changed to add to the secrecy. Judges Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, Rita Ora and Mo Gilligan try to guess their identities by their voices and a string of clues.

In season one, Denise was voted off the show after performing Bonnie Tyler’s I Need A Hero.

She has now revealed what she loved and didn’t like during her time on the series.

The mother-of-one said: “The best part was just the whole being a bit secretive about it, I found it quite amusing.

“Obviously, nobody knew I had done it, I hadn’t even told Eddie [her fiancé] or Betsy [her daughter], so keeping it a secret from them and then doing a review of them finding out.”

What she didn’t enjoy, Denise said she struggled to sing behind her mask.

“The worst part for me was just the costume, you can’t really hear yourself when you’re singing,” she added.

“You all sing live… you feel like afterwards, ‘I wish I could’ve done it again and sounded better’.

“I could only acquaint it to, if you put a crash helmet on and your voice bounces back at you, it’s a bit of a weird feeling.

“But I just enjoyed it so much.”

The remaining contestants in this series include; Robin, Badger, Sausage, Dragon and Harlequin.

Denise believes singer Gabrielle could be behind the Harlequin costume.

“She’s just got a tone to her voice I think it could be her,” she revealed.

“It’s a difficult one isn’t it, but such a brilliant show.”

Gabrielle is one of the popular names in the mix of guesses for Harlequin.

Last weekend, another user wrote: “First time watching and I’m going with Gabrielle for Harlequin #MaskedSinger.”

“Definitely feel Harlequin could be Gabrielle #MaskedSinger,” a second commented.

A third added: “#maskedsinger Harlequin sounds just like Gabrielle!! Fantastic voice.”

The contestants who have been unveiled so far include; Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Mel B, Martine McCutcheon, Glenn Hoddle, John Thomson, Lenny Henry and Morten Harket.

The Masked Singer UK continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.

Denise is fronting HEINEKEN’s Brewing Good Cheer campaign which highlights the important role pubs play in communities, needed more than ever as a result of the pandemic.

As part of the campaign HEINEKEN, in collaboration with The Campaign to End Loneliness, has released the Opens Arms report which reveals how great British pubs help to tackle loneliness and social isolation.
