EastEnders Katie Jarvis pleads guilty to racially aggravated harassment after street row

Katie Jarvis has plead guilty to racially aggravated harassment after an altercation with a woman in Southend-on-Sea in July 2020.

The former EastEnders actress, 30, plead guilty at Basildon Crown Court after she was heard shouting "black lives don't matter" during the street row nearly two years ago.

Jarvis, who played Hayley Slater on the soap, was arrested and charged with racially aggravated harassment, common assault and two counts of assault by beating. She originally denied the charges.

However, following a morning of legal discussions Jarvis plead guilty to using racially aggravated harassment against Michelle Antonio in July 2020.

She also admitted to a charge of common assault after a court heard Jarvis spat towards a pub worker.

Prosecutors didn't go into detail about the common assault charge, and only confirmed it was linked to a "spitting incident".

Judge Samantha Leigh adjourned sentencing until Wednesday 20 April morning. During the hearing, she said there had been CCTV captured of the incident which had been "unpleasant" but did not give an indication on the sentence.

Jarvis was granted unconditional bail.

Patrick Heart, who defended Jarvis, said statements from the former actress' family would be heard during sentencing.

The charges were related to an incident on Southend-on-Sea. It was alleged Jarvis got into an argument with four women outside Papillon's bar on the seafront.

She was later arrested n suspicion of assault and racially aggravated public order.

Essex Police shared a statement at the time of the arrest. It read: "A 29 year old woman was arrested on Friday 31 July just after 10.05pm following reports of a disturbance in Marine Parade, Southend.

"She has been arrested on suspicion of assault and racially aggravated public order.

"She has been released on bail until Friday 21 August."

Jarvis was pictured outside court ahead of the trial on Tuesday. She wore a black and white floral patterned jumper and black fur-look scarf as she spoke on the phone.

The former soap actress had her hair tied away from her face and wore a pair of silver hoop earrings as she stood outside court.
