Sophie joined Emmerdale as Holly Barton in 2009 and left the soap in 2016 after her character was killed off in a high-profile storyline.
Fans of the show were left stunned after her character Holly was found dead in her bed following a huge overdose.
The scenes were even more surprising as the character had been clean for a while and been looking to put her life back on track.
She had even started a relationship with factory boss Jai Sharma and was doing well in her photography career.
Viewers were already aware that actress Sophie was leaving, but bosses kept the details of her death a big secret.
Speaking to The Mirror after her exit was aired, the soap star said: "It’s been challenging to highlight drug addiction and it’s a very serious and stark warning to show the devastating affects it can have on people.
"Holly was a normal girl from a normal family who went down the road of drug taking and drug abuse and it wasn’t because of bad parenting, or neglect, or lack of education.”
The actress added: “I hope it raises awareness and hopefully it gets more help for people who are struggling with addiction.
"In fact not just drug addiction but all types of addiction."
