Everything We Know About Kathy Griffin’s Lung Cancer Diagnosis

Comedian Kathy Griffin has shared sad health news with her fans: She was diagnosed with lung cancer. The TV personality took to Instagram with the shocking announcement Monday, writing, “I’ve got to tell you guys something. I have cancer. I’m about to go into surgery to have half of my left lung removed” (via Us Weekly).

“I’ve never smoked,” the 60-year-old continued, adding, “The doctors are very optimistic as it is stage one and contained to my left lung. Hopefully no chemo or radiation after this and I should have normal function with my breathing. I should be up and running around as usual in a month or less.”

Griffin concluded her post by writing, “It’s been a helluva 4 years, trying to get back to work, making you guys laugh and entertaining you, but I’m gonna be just fine.”

She added a quick PSA about being fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and said, “The consequences for being unvaccinated would have been even more serious.” The star also implored her 690,000 followers, “Please stay up to date on your medical check ups. It’ll save your life.”

In the comments section of the actor’s Instagram post, Griffin received an outpouring of love and support, with comedian Caroline Rhea writing, “Sending you lots of love Kathy.” Ross Matthews said, “Love you so much!!! I’m here if you need anything. Don’t hesitate.”

Nikki Glaser wrote, “We love you Kathy! Thank you for being so honest and strong. You are an example to us all.” Actress Andie McDowell commented, “Wow So brave. My heart is wide-open for you. Thank God you found it early and a safe recovery,” and Amy Schumer commented, “Love you Kathy!!!! You got this!”

More star friends flooded the comments, with Rosie O’Donnell writing, “u got this griffin.” Meanwhile, the comedian’s fans were also on hand to cheer her along as she begins her road to recovery.

CNN reports that in 2017, Griffin supported her sister Joyce who was going through cancer by shaving her head. Sadly, Joyce died that year, while the star’s brother Gary also died of cancer three years earlier.
