It’s no secret that the Royal family are encouraged to have neutral nails. In particular, the Queen has worn Essie Ballet Slippers, which is a sophisticated and elegant nude pink colour, since 1989. Kate Middleton is a keen supporter of this rule, too.

However, Meghan Markle has been seen to break this rule many times opting for a vibrant red or deep maroon.

Purses and clutch bags are a crucial element to the Royal dress code and not just because of how great they look with an outfit.

The Queen’s well known Launer handbags are actually used to send signals to her staff when she's having tricky social situations. For instance, if she needs to get out of a conversation, the Queen will shift her handbag from her left arm to the right and if she places it on the floor, this means she needs rescuing immediately. If she places it on the table at dinner, this means everything needs to be wrapped up within five minutes.

They’re also used to keep both hands occupied if the Royals don’t want to shake hands (not that shaking hands will be a thing for a very long time).

Her colour choices

  • Kate Middleton re-wears chic £349 camel coat as she and Prince William make public appearance

  • Kate Middleton stuns in chic £59.99 Zara blazer in surprise St. Patrick's Day appearance

The Queen is pretty well known for her love of colour and has been spotted in pretty much every colour of the rainbow. It’s not just to make a style statement but it’s so the public can spot her when she leaves the palace. The Queen was reported saying: "No one would know who I am?" if she wore beige.

As well as her brightly coloured coats and hats, she also has an impressive collection of umbrellas from Fulton Umbrellas, who earned their Royal Warrant in 2008, which all colour coordinate with her outfits. Queen Elizabeth opts for the birdcage dome style so it enables her to see out of it and people to see in.

Will the Royal dress code shift when Prince William takes over the throne? We will see…
