Mary Killen has been a part of the Channel 4 hit show for six years, but at the beginning she was not so convinced she wanted to be watched by millions as she sat at home. The reality television star, who is based in Wiltshire, believed the programme was an “invasion of privacy”.

However, thanks to some persuasion from her husband and co-star Giles Wood, Mary agreed to appear in the show.

Now she is happy about her final decision and considers Gogglebox a “brilliant idea”.

She said: “In the beginning, nobody thought it could possibly work.”

“It would just be absurd. I didn’t want the invasion of privacy but Giles wanted to be on, so I agreed.

“But it’s a very simple, brilliant idea. You get snippets of the good programmes and you can tell, rather like speed dating, whether you’d want to see the whole show as a result.”

Mary went on to explain that Gogglebox is not just an entertainment programme, but can also give an account of what people in the UK think.

“Gogglebox became a barometer of what the public is thinking,” Mary told the Sun.

“For that reason I know that quite a lot of the Government watch it, and Boris Johnson will even be told what’s going on.

“It really does give you a snapshot of people in the country.

“That makes it the most uniquely British programme, and it could only have been made by Channel 4 because it’s a uniquely British channel.”

Mary and Giles recently sent fans into a frenzy after they revealed a throwback photograph.

The couple took to their Instagram account to show their 155,000 followers what they looked like on their wedding day.

In the quirky snap, Mary can be seen wearing a white dress under a blazer jacket.

True to her bohemian style, the Gogglebox star paired the ensemble with a white hat and a pink bouquet of flowers.

Giles went for a more traditional look with a long tail blazer with pale grey trousers.

The couple could be seen smiling at the cameras they walked down the stairs.

Fans cherished the candid snap, with carden.stephen chiming in: “Love you guy’s should have your own show. (sic)”

cariad64 added: “What a good looking couple, Mary you resemble Marianne Faithful there.”

sarahluker74 quipped: “The greatest photo of all time.

“I’m guessing Giles retired the very next day?”
