Tributes have begun pouring in for Halyna Hutchins who has died at the age of 42 following an on-set accident of the film Rust. The cinematographer was accidentally shot along with the film’s director Joel Souza, who is still in hospital.

Halyna was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital in New Mexico on Thursday.

She had gun wounds to her stomach after a prop gun misfired.

Police in Santa Fe has confirmed it was Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin who fired the prop gun.

Santa Fe Sheriff Department said: “Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Bonanza Creek Ranch movie set of the western ‘Rust’, October 21, 2021, when a 911 caller reported a shooting on the set.

“The sheriff’s office confirms that two individuals were shot on the set of Rust. Halyna Hutchins, 42, director of photography and Joel Souza, 48, director, were shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin, 63, producer and actor.”

“Ms Hutchins was transported, via helicopter, to University of New Mexico Hospital where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel.”

Halyna began her career working on short films, including Creedy and the Bee and Coco Noir.

In 2019, she worked on the feature film Darlin’ and has also been a director of photography on The Mad Hatter, Blindfire and Archenemy.

Most recently, she worked on the television series A Luv Tale: The Series.

In 2019, she was named a rising star in the field by American Cinematographer magazine.

At the time of her death, she’d been the cinematographer on Rust, which stars Alec as well as Jensen Ackles and Travis Fimmel.

Tributes have poured in for the Ukrainian-born star following her death.

Actor Elijah Wood wrote on Twitter: “Absolutely horrifying and devastating news about cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins.

“My heart goes out to her family.”

Actor Joe Manganiello wrote: “I’m in shock. I was so lucky to have had Halyna Hutchins as my DP on Archenemy.

“An incredible talent & great person. I can’t believe this could happen in this day and age… gunfire from a prop gun could kill a crew member?

“What a horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to her family.”

Film critic Katie Walsh added: “Rest in Peace Halyna Hutchins. What a terrible and tragic loss.”

Director James Gunn also penned: “My greatest fear is that someone will be fatally hurt on one of my sets. I pray this will never happen.

“My heart goes out to all of those affected by the tragedy today on Rust, especially Halyna Hutchins & her family.”

Dwayne Johnson also commented on her Instagram: “I am so so sorry.

“Rest easy. My love and strength to your family.”
