Helen George, 36, has revealed she would like to bring back killed off characters to Call The Midwife in the style of the 1997 movie, Titanic’s last scene, where the main character, Rose (played by Kate Winslet) is reunited with her deceased boyfriend, Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio). The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant said she would “love” to have Barbara Hereward and Sister Evangelina return to the show in particular.

I’d love them all to come back

Opening up on characters she would like to see back on Call The Midwife, Helen told Radio Times: “I’d love all of them to come back. Even those who’ve died, like dear Barbara [Charlotte Ritchie] and Sister Evangelina [Pam Ferris].

“Maybe we could have a moment like at the end of Titanic where all the characters return and we walk down the steps of Nonnatus House together!”

Helen plays midwife Trixie Franklin in the hugely popular historical drama.

The show follows the extraordinary lives of the nurses, midwives and nuns of Nonnatus house in east London’s Poplar.

Barbara was a nurse who had been hired to replace Cynthia Miller.

She was diagnosed with septicaemia (blood poisoning) in series seven, and despite some initial improvement in her health, died with her husband, Tom Hereward, and best friend Phyllis Crane at her side in her last moments.

Meanwhile, Sister Evangelina passed away following a second stroke in the season five finale, devastating those that knew her.

The returning cast members for the latest series include Helen (Trixie), Jenny Agutter (Sister Julienne), Linda Bassett (Nurse Crane), Judy Parfitt (Sister Monica Joan), Fenella Woolgar (Sister Hilda), Ella Bruccoleri (Sister Frances), Leonie Elliott (Lucille), and Stephen McGann (Dr Turner).

Cliff Parisi (Fred), Annabelle Apsion (Violet), Georgie Glen (Miss Higgins), Max Macmillan (Timothy), Zephryn Taitte (Cyril) and Daniel Laurie (Reggie) will also be back.

Helen has appeared in the show since 2012 and this season her character began training alongside doctors.

She told BBC: “Episode one is very exciting for Trixie, as she gets to go to the Lady Emily clinic which is a private clinic in Chelsea to observe how their systems work, and how the midwifery is in place which is a more doctor-lead delivery process.

“The thought is that Nonnatus House will rent out midwives and nuns, to the Lady Emily to help out – to staff the clinic, and in return they’ll get a monetary fund, they’ll get paid so Nonnatus House is saved.”

Some fans believe her character could change career permanently going forward, as they took to Twitter to speculate.

One said: “Trixie is such a trendsetter, I think she should study to become a doctor.”

Another added: “I’d like to see Trixie focus on becoming an OB/GYN. She has so much more potential than just getting married.”

They pointed out how Doctor Turner was in need of extra help when it came to caring for the patients of Poplar.

Speaking of Nonnatus House, one fan said: “I’m intrigued and excited at the prospect of their expansion.

“I’m hoping to see Trixie really come into her own independence and maybe lead a branch or clinic herself.”

Others speculated she could perhaps leave Poplar and look to open up a practice elsewhere.

Another fan added: “I would like for Trixie to further her studies and become a doctor. And maybe find a soulmate who is also a doctor or specialist nurse.”

Call The Midwife airs today on BBC at 8pm.
