And while Henry Cavill, 38, who landed his big break playing Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, has enjoyed a very successful Hollywood career, the same can’t be said about his love life. The Justice League star fell in love with showjumping rider Ellen Whitaker, who he began dating in the spring of 2011.

I couldn’t believe it when he asked me to marry him

The pair had known each other for two years prior but initially started off being nothing more than good friends, with Henry regularly attending Ellen’s shows when he wasn’t working.

Just months into their relationship the Hollywood hunk decided to pop the question.

Speaking of the moment when Henry got down on one knee and proposed, Ellen — who’d been training for the 2012 Olympics at the time — gave an interview in 2011, admitting that she was stunned by her then-fiancé’s move.

“I couldn’t believe it when he asked me to marry him. I thought we were there to celebrate his birthday. It was such a surprise and I am so happy,” she gushed.

While Ellen was excited for what the future had in store for her and Henry, fans were devastated to learn that by August 2012, the two had decided to call it quits, with sources claiming that they both knew the romance had run its course, subsequently deciding it was best to part ways.

Us Weekly insisted that there was “no fallout” between Henry and Ellen when they went their separate ways.

Two years later, Ellen gave birth to her firstborn, Harry Marinas, with fellow showjumper Antonio Marinas Soto in 2014 before welcoming their second child, Frankie Thomas, in March 2016.

In 2012, Henry began dating MMA fighter and actress Gina Carano, with the aforementioned publication describing the latter as a “firecracker” who had “finally found someone who can handle her”.

It’s believed that they briefly called it quits for a few months before giving their romance another shot in 2013 — the same year they would become pet parents to an Akita puppy.

But even sharing a dog couldn’t save this relationship from falling apart once more, with Henry calling things off for good the following year. He reportedly kept the pup.

After two failed high-profile relationships, Henry decided to focus all of his attention on his career, which had skyrocketed during this time thanks to the success that came with the 2012 blockbuster hit Man of Steel, which went on to gross close to 550 million at the box office.

It wasn’t long after his rise to stardom before Henry ditched his single status and began dating The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco in 2013.

The shocking part was that the two reportedly only lasted for an underwhelming ten days. While their romance ended relatively fast, sources close to the situation asserted that Henry and Kaley would continue as good friends.

The blonde beauty shed light on the short-lived relationship in a 2014 interview with Cosmopolitan, saying: “It was Superman. I had no one following me until I met Superman. I’ve been in this business for 20 years, and my whole life, I could go anywhere, do anything.”

Meanwhile, Henry caused a stir when he began dating former Bristol University student Tara King in 2016, who was only 19 years old when they got together. Henry was 32 at the time.

“She protects me and is protective of me when I am having a hard time,” he shared in an interview with The Mirror. “She’s there when I need looking after and the world is a little too heavy. Then she will happily take that weight for me and make sure that I am OK.”

Two months later, Henry and Tara split, with an insider once again insisting that the Blood Creek actor and his ex would remain pals.

After another short-lived relationship in 2017 with stuntwoman Lucy Cork, it appeared as if Henry finally found the one after being photographed with Natalie Viscuso earlier this year.

The two were snapped taking a stroll through London in April, with fans speculating whether Henry was officially off the market again. A source later confirmed that they were, in fact, dating.

Henry made things official when he posted a doting photo of his girlfriend playing chess with him that same month.

“This is me looking quietly confident shortly before my beautiful and brilliant love Natalie, destroys me at chess,” the caption read.

Natalie posted the same photo on her Instagram with the caption: “Just teaching my dear Henry how to play some chess… or… maybe he let me win?”
