Choosing a name for a baby is a big deal for anyone, but celebrities feel extra pressure to get it right. Their new bundle of joy’s name is going to be broadcast to the world. The free-spirited Drew Barrymore had a big choice to make when she had her daughter. She needed to pick a baby name that would be fitting and unique without singling out her little girl too much. So, how did Barrymore end up selecting the name Olive for her daughter?
Olive is the oldest of Drew Barrymore’s two children
Drew Barrymore has been married and divorced three times. The first two marriages did not produce any children. However, her third marriage with Will Kopelman in 2012 came after welcoming a daughter named Olive into their lives in 2011. In 2014, Olive was joined by little sister Frankie.
The name for their oldest little girl comes with an adorable backstory that’s highly relatable to any expectant mother. When Barrymore was just three months pregnant, she had a doctor’s appointment. The doctor described the size of the growing embryo familiarly by comparing the baby as a recognizable fruit. As BuzzFeed reports, Barrymore just knew it was the name for her little girl: “I was three months pregnant and they said, ‘Your baby is the size of an olive’ and that was it.”
Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman split in 2016
After four years of marriage, Barrymore and Kopelman went their separate ways in 2016. While Barrymore expressed regret over the end of the marriage and worried that she was “failing” her children, it does seem that the star has been able to make peace with her life path in recent years.
Now a fierce proponent of body positivity and self-acceptance, Barrymore had opened up about how drugs and a party culture consumed her life when she was a very young teen. Since she began acting at the age of five, she was always surrounded by people much older. Trying to keep up left her struggling with addiction.
These days, Barrymore is much more balanced. She spends a lot of time with her daughters and works on a beauty line called Flower. She also takes on projects that interest and fulfill her. She’s publicly said that she’s not sure she’ll ever “find love” again. The idea of both returning to the dating scene and staying single equally scare her. She seems to be focusing her energy on the present instead.
Earlier marriages were brief and flashy for Drew Barrymore
While her marriage with Will Kopelman was obviously a quite serious love that gave the couple two children and many years together, Barrymore’s earlier marriages were less stable. In 1994 at 19 years old, she married Jeremy Thomas. The relationship was fast and intense.
Barrymore later reflected with Whoopi Goldberg, her co-star for Boys on the Side, about showing up on set to tell her she’d spontaneously gotten married over the weekend. Today reports, Barrymore told Goldberg, “Talk about shame. Like, ‘Yeah, no, I wasn’t really talking about this guy last week, but I’m married to him now. So happy Monday.’” The marriage ended in 1995.
In 2001, Barrymore entered another marriage that would turn out to end quickly. She and comedian Tom Green tied the knot in 2001. By 2002, they had called it quits. Green acknowledged that he keeps most of his thoughts about that time private, calling it a “crazy, whirlwind of a time.”
