Coronation Street star Charlie Lawson has hit out at ITV show I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, blasting it’s “politically correct” environment. In a new interview, the soap actor, who played Jim McDonald in the show, told how he wouldn’t last long in the Welsh Castle as he’d end up “offending the entire British population”.

I wouldn’t fit in with this new politically correct jungle which surrounds us

The actor ras speaking about his Corrie co-star Simon Gregson appearing on this year’s show, who he is backing to win.

Simon entered the castle alongside EastEnders star Adam Woodyatt, with them both being named “lords” of the castle from the off.

Despite backing his friend to win the show, Charlie admitted that he wouldn’t last long on the programme himself due to “political correctness”.

The Corrie personality told how he’s been asked to appear on the show twice before, but has turned down the opportunity over his inability to “keep [his] gob shut”.

Charlie said: “I’m afraid I’d be slung out within hours for being rude to someone.”

Opening up on whether he’d ever appear on the reality show in the future, the actor ruled it out completely.

He continued: “I wouldn’t do it because I’d probably let myself and the camp down, I don’t suffer fools gladly and I don’t think I’d be able to keep me gob shut.”

The star went on to say that he wouldn’t be able to refrain from uttering expletives, explaining that he would get through the Bushtucker trials by “roaring and swearing”.

He candidly admitted that he didn’t think he’d fit into the “new politically correct” environment of the show, adding that he’d end up offending viewers.

Charlie said: “I don’t think I’d be asked, I wouldn’t fit in with this new politically correct jungle which surrounds us.

“I don’t get on with that one bit so I would just end up offending the entire British population as a whole because everybody’s so goddamn sensitive now about everything,” he told The Belfast Telegraph’s Sunday Life newspaper.

Despite not usually tuning in to the ITV programme, Charlie admitted to keeping up with the show this year to watch his Corrie co-star Simon and cheer him on.

He revealed that he also turned in to last year’s series after This Morning’s Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes asked him to, as Coronation Street legend Bev Callard was on the programme.

Charlie first made an appearance on Coronation Street back in 1989. Most recently, he returned for a brief stint in 2018.

Earlier this year, the ITV star urged fame-hungry soap stars to “throw their bad attitude away”.

The actor explained that he thinks some actors care more about their profile than “practising their craft”.

The actor added: “Throw all that bad attitude away and go to drama school. It wasn’t meant to be easy.

“I watch the actors of today on very popular and celebrated, familiar shows and some of them are just awful.

“Get in some work and learn your art,” he continued to the Daily Star online.

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! continues this evening at 9pm on ITV.
