EastEnders fans are set to see one of the soap's most notorious villains return to the Square as Janine Butcher is back.

Charlie Brooks, who plays Janine, and the BBC have both confirmed the rumours that super villain Janine is on her way back to Walford – so there is sure to be plenty of drama in store and an explosive return.

In a statement confirming the news, Charlie, 40, said: "I am beyond excited to be slipping back into Janine's shoes and returning to the square. The time feels right and I can't wait to find out what she's been up to for the last seven years!

"She is and always has been SO much fun to play. Feels a bit like coming home. It's good to be back."

EastEnders executive producer Jon Sen added: "Janine is one of EastEnders' most iconic characters who is loved, and often despised, in equal measure by viewers and all those in Walford.

"Charlie’s portrayal of Janine over the years has created some of EastEnders' most memorable moments and we are all really excited to see Charlie bring her incredible portrayal of Janine back again.

"We have lots of drama in store for Janine, in fact it may be wise for some of the residents of Walford to invest in some slip-on shoes…”

Janine's biggest storylines included murdering her husband Barry Evans (Shaun Williamson) by pushing him off a cliff on New Year's Day 2004, conspiring with another Walford villain Archie Mitchell (Larry Lamb) to defraud the Mitchell family, and murdering her fourth husband Michael Moon (Steve John Shepherd) to escape a custody battle.

She was last seen heading to Paris in 2014 to pick up her daughter Scarlett, whose father was Michael Moon, but her whereabouts have been unknown since then.

Her daughter Scarlett is also set to return, but will not be as much of a shock to the Albert Square residents as Janine’s sudden reappearance which will likely send shockwaves around Walford.

Plenty of Janine's enemies are still in town, so viewers can expect to see her pick up where she left off with her many rivalries.

Charlie also announced her big news to fans on Instagram with a video of herself in character as Janine and wrote: "There’s so much in store… she’s coming home…"
