Jess Wright feels ‘so much pressure’ to look good walking down the aisle at her wedding

Like many brides-to-be, Jess Wright has spent the last few months worrying about whether her wedding is going to go ahead. The former TOWIE star is set to marry businessman William Lee-Kemp, 37, in Majorca in June, but Jess tells new magazine that she’s still unsure if the nuptials can even happen amid unclear travel restrictions.

“I know as much as anyone does,” Jess confesses, “It’s just a case of waiting and seeing what happens.”

The 35-year-old has been dating William since 2019, and was surprised when he whipped out a dazzling diamond ring on a trip to the French Alps last year. But despite things still being up in the air, Jess has been keeping busy prepping the parts of the wedding she can control – even picking out her bridal lingerie from her new collaboration with Pour Moi.

It’s a welcome distraction for Jess, whose family has been hit hard by the pandemic. In January, Jess’s brother, Heart DJ Mark Wright, 34, urged fans to take restrictions seriously, revealing that their father, Mark Snr, had been hospitalised with Covid-19 and that two of their uncles were also being treated in hospital for the virus.

Sadly, Jess’s beloved uncle Eddie passed away last month after an eight-week fight. Described by Jess as her “second dad”, Eddie was the father of Jess’s cousin, fellow reality star Elliott Wright. Both Jess and Mark paid tribute to Eddie on their social media pages after the tragic news broke.

“Not just my uncle, but like a second dad to me in so many ways,” Jess wrote. “The best grandad, dad, husband, son and uncle there ever could be. Your smile lights up every room and you are the glue that held us all together.”

After such a tough few weeks, Jess tells new that the family are “getting there” when we offer our condolences, adding that the Wright clan are hoping they’ll be able to spend quality time together again soon.

Hi Jess, how are you all doing?

Thank you. We’re getting there. It’s been a really rubbish few months with everything that’s gone on. We’re just sticking together as a family and supporting each other.

Hopefully you’ll be able to see more of each other soon…

Yes, I’m just looking forward to hugging people. It’s soul destroying that we haven’t been able to hug our loved ones for the last year. I can’t wait for a holiday and some normality.

Do you have any tips for others who are going through something similar?

Whenever I’m feeling down, I find self-help or motivating podcasts really good. I also think putting on a film that makes you feel nostalgic for a happy time in your life can really help. I know we can’t be around people, but we should all try to Zoom the people we love.

At least work has been a distraction for you. Tell us about your Pour Moi lingerie collection…

It’s such a gorgeous collection. It’s a lovely brand and the stuff is so wearable for all shapes and sizes. It’s been so nice to shoot all the images. I love all the pieces – I hope everyone else does too.

There’s a bridal lingerie set in the collection, does that get you excited for your big day?

Yes! That was fun to work on. To even be thinking about bridal underwear was just so exciting.

Do you feel confident shooting swimwear and lingerie?

I wouldn’t say I feel overly confident. I’m always putting myself down on these shoots and thinking I look a bit big. But, do you know what, I got quite a lot of compliments on that shoot saying I looked toned and had lost weight. And I have been trying really hard at home with a regime on my Peloton Bike and other home workouts like Train Wright. My partner and I love to ride our [road] bikes, too. I’ve made a conscious effort to balance out any bad diet with a lot of exercise!

Have you switched up your diet too?

Meal prep is really key as it helps with portion control. I also like juicing but when I do that, I do eat as well.

Was it tempting to overindulge during lockdown?

Yeah, it was so hard when there was no end in sight for the virus. It was easy to have no motivation. I found January really hard and wanted to eat endless comfort food.

Is your upcoming wedding a good motivation for getting fitter?

It’s definitely all for the wedding! It’s been at the forefront of my mind when doing all of this training – I just think about being in my dress. I feel like there’s going to be so much pressure – particularly being in the public eye. When I walk down that aisle, there’s going to be a lot of eyes on me. And I want to feel good for myself, too.

Your skin looks amazing – do you have any go-to beauty secrets?

I love using Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair followed by the moisturiser. I think it makes my skin glow the next day. I also like Dr Paw Paw lip balm and RevitaLash to keep my lashes long.

Do you have any update about whether your big day will go ahead this summer?

I know as much as anyone does. It’s just a case of waiting and seeing what happens.

Have you got your dress and all the other details sorted?

I’m pretty much sorted. Now it’s just a case of seeing whether it can actually go ahead.

Do you know what kind of honeymoon you’d like?

We have quite a good idea, but everything is so up in the air with work schedules. So it all depends. At the moment, we’re just focussing on the wedding and hoping it will go ahead.

Has the last year brought you and William closer?

We found our feet in the first lockdown. There were definitely ups and downs, as I’m sure there was with everyone being together so much. But we absolutely came through the other side and we’re perfect now. Lockdown confirmed to us that we were meant to be, because if we could survive that, we could survive anything!

You’ve said before your mum Carol is desperate to be a grandma. Has she been dropping lots of hints to you and your siblings?

We’re all at the age where we’ll probably have children at some point soon and it will be amazing when we do. She always says they’ll no doubt come like buses with us lot. So it will be an interesting few years when and if that happens!

Will you get together as a family as soon as you’re able?

Yes, we love getting together for barbecues and holidays. We did a couple of Zooms at the beginning of lockdown, but we all got bored of that, so we’ve mostly been catching up on the family group WhatsApp chat.

What made you open up about your psoriasis battle recently?

My psoriasis has got a lot worse because of the pandemic. With my uncle and all the stress of the past year, it’s flared up and I wanted to share that everything seems perfect, but it’s not always perfect. I’ve had millions of messages about it so I’m really glad that I did share it, as so many people have said they appreciate my openness. I think it’s important to keep it as real as possible.

Have you picked up any hobbies in lockdown?

Cycling – I haven’t done that since I was a little girl. And walking the dogs – I do that far more than I used to. I’m quite a clean freak at home, so I’ve been doing a lot of cleaning. And then I do loads of cooking. I never let my partner cook as he’d do the most boring dishes, so it’s down to me in that department.

What’s your speciality?

You can’t beat a good spag bol. I use turkey mince and cook it all from scratch. That’s my go-to dinner.

Have you and William been having date nights?

We have had a couple of date nights, for the anniversary of our engagement and stuff. We try, but there’s not much to do, is there?!

What TV shows have you been watching to get you through lockdown?

We’re always finding new boxsets. We love serial killer stuff, which is a bit strange, I know [laughs]! We love Married At First Sight Australia and Selling Sunset , I can’t wait for that to come back. I’m obsessed with Schitt’s Creek too, it’s the best thing on Earth.

Having a reality TV background yourself, does it give you a different perspective when you watch things like Married At First Sight?

I watch them on the show and I think, “Oh God, they’re going to watch this back and think, ‘What have I done?’” At the same time though, reality TV is amazing for controversial characters and scandal.
