Judi Love calls for Love Island to introduce more ‘rigorous’ selection process amid diversity row

In her OK! column this week, Loose Women panelist Judi Love has voiced her concerns over the selection process on ITV's hottest show, Love Island. The 41 year old has said more 'rigorous' questions need to be asked by producers to ensure that the show isn't perpetuating negativity around black beauty.

Also in this week's column, Judi opens up about her daughter Shan's 16th birthday party and reveals the touching gift she bought her. Plus, there's an exciting project in the works for Judi which she can't wait to tell us about!

The dark side of Love Island

Dating show Love Island kicked off last week and yet again we saw a young, dark-skinned woman get picked last. It was hard to see Kaz Kamwi go through the same thing as Samira Mighty and Yewande Biala in previous seasons.

The narrative it creates is that darker girls are not as attractive or desired, and this is wrong. Maybe producers don’t realise contestants aren't always being truthful when they say "every type is my type” in interviews.

Let’s have a better look at who they have dated before and be more rigorous about the selection process! It’s early days in this series but I feel they are all just versions of the contestants we’ve seen before.

Sweet sixteen

It was my daughter Shan’s 16th birthday last week. It feels like it was only days ago she was my baby. But it’s beautiful to see her grow into a young woman and how our conversations and witness the time we spend together is changing. I look forward to all the different things we can do now she’s older.

We held a party with a few of her friends. She got some customised trainers and a beautiful heart chain. I feel blessed and grateful that I can celebrate with her. As a single mum, it’s hard not to reflect when these milestones come around, especially as Shan is leaving school too. I have to pat myself on the back that we’re growing and learning together after going through so much.

But you still feel sad the parent who isn’t there is missing out on this beautiful young person. I always have open conversations with my children and ask them how they are feeling at big moments.

Serena Williams is a true ace

Serena Williams was forced to drop out of Wimbledon last week after sustaining an injury in her match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. She is so committed to the game and it’s heartbreaking when things like this happen.

She might see it as a failure but to me, she still conquered because she was there and she already has an incredible legacy. Just because she’s out of this tournament, doesn’t mean she won’t come back. Maybe there is a different path she’s supposed to be following at this time.

For all of us, it shows that even the best in their game suffer setbacks and it doesn’t mean you can’t bounce back. Seeing how committed and emotional she was made me love her even more. Wimbo won’t be the same without her.

Busy bee

I’m grateful that work is so busy at the moment. I’m filming something really exciting but I can’t say anything about it. It’s so hard, as I want to share it on Instagram and here in my column. As soon as I can, I’ll be telling you all about it!

Mum bods

Georgia Kousoulou got real about her post-pregnancy body last week and said remarks about bodies “bouncing back” made her feel bad in the early days of motherhood. It’s great that she is raising awareness of this.

What people need to remember is celebrity mums have celebrity money – they can afford a PT, a nip and tuck, and au pairs if they want to.

It can make normal mums feel guilty. Everyone’s bodies are different and some people don’t just snap back like that. So the more normality we see on Instagram, the better.

Diana's lessons in love

Last week would have been Princess Diana’s 60th Birthday. Everyone was a fan of Diana. I just remember her being so elegant and beautiful. We all loved her but we realised just how adored she was when she passed away.

I was in my twenties and I remember getting home from a party and seeing my mum at 4am sitting in front
of the TV crying. Everyone was touched by her passing. It really makes you think that you need to show the people you love that you love them all the time, not just when they’re gone
