Judi Love says it breaks my heart Meghan faced racism alone with only Harry

Loose Women star and comedian Judi Love has expressed her heartbreak at the prospect of the Duchess of Sussex being forced to handle racism alone "with only Harry fighting her corner".

"The Met have confirmed Meghan Markle got 'very real' threats while she was a working royal," the TV panellist, 42, writes in her OK! column this week.

"In the same week, it emerged Prince William’s godmother – Elizabeth II’s lady-in-waiting, Lady Susan Hussey – made racist remarks to Ngozi Fulani at a Buckingham Palace do.

"I hope this incident, and having the police now standing by her, makes people take Meghan’s claims about the discriminatory comments she received seriously."

Judi continues: "It just breaks my heart that prior to this, she had to go through this alone with only Harry fighting her corner."

Last week, the Metropolitan Police assistant commisioner agreed that Meghan had received "disgusting and very real" threats whilst working as a Royal, prior to she and husband Prince Harry's resignation and later departure to the States.

Neil Basu – the ex-head of counter-terrorism policing in England – spoke to Channel 4 news in his final interview as assistant commissioner last Wednesday.

"If you'd seen the stuff that was written and you were receiving it, the kind of rhetoric that's online, if you don't know what I know, you would feel under threat all of the time," he told viewers.

Asked whether there had been genuine threats against Meghan from the far-right, he confirmed: "Absolutely. We had teams investigating it. People have been prosecuted for those threats."

Former actress Meghan, who with Harry moved to California along with son Archie and daughter Lilibet in 2020, often spoke out about the abuse they received before they left for America and how it affected both of their mental wellbeing.

As early as 2016, following the pair's public confirmation of their relationship, the Prince issued a statement attacking social media trolls for targeting his wife.

Royal fans are set to get even further insight into Harry and Meghan's struggles over the past years as their Netflix docuseries is set to be released next week on Thursday, 8 December.

The Met's statement was closely followed by the news that prominent black advocate for survivors of domestic abuse revealed that she was repeatedly asked by a member of the Buckingham Palace household where she “really came from” while attending the Queen Consort's reception.

Ngozi Fulani, chief executive of Sistah Space, described the conversation as a "violation" and said the experience at Camilla’s major engagement on violence against women on Tuesday will "never leave me".

She said a household member – now since revealed to be Prince William's godmother and The late Queen's 'lady in waiting' Lady Susan Hussey – challenged her when she said her charity was based in Hackney, saying: "No, what part of Africa are YOU from?"

Buckingham Palace has since announced that a member of the household has resigned and apologised for these "unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments."

The Palace said in a statement: “In this instance, unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments have been made. We have reached out to Ngozi Fulani on this matter, and are inviting her to discuss all elements of her experience in person if she wishes.

“In the meantime, the individual concerned would like to express her profound apologies for the hurt caused and has stepped aside from her honorary role with immediate effect.

“All members of the Household are being reminded of the diversity and inclusivity policies which they are required to uphold at all times.”
