Strictly Come Dancing pro Karen Hauer has opened up about her split from Kevin Clifton in a new interview. The professional dancer spoke about “other factors” that affected their relationship, during a chat with Samantha Baines for The Divorce Club podcast.

Karen admitted that there were lots of elements that played a part in the breakdown of their marriage, but that she would have “never let go of it” without a fight.

Karen and Kevin tied the knot in 2015 and announced their separation three years later.

She hinted that outside factors, that they had no control over, were a problem for “unstable” couples.

The 38-year-old cryptically said that things had happened that “really hurt” the pair, but did not explain what these “other factors” were.

She told the host: “I didn’t want to let go of that marriage. You have someone that your working with, that your compatible with.

“And then again, because of a lot of things that were going on around us, that we didn’t have control over, because we didn’t know how to control what was going on within us, as well.

“And when you bring other factors in, whether it’s family, whether it’s work, whether it’s your ambition of where you want to go with your career and things like that.

“It starts really messing with you if you’re not stable as a person or as a couple.”

She went on to say that under different circumstances the couple may have been able to resolve their issues.

However, the Latin dancer said that other things had happened which had hurt them both.

Karen continued: “Under different circumstances, with different understanding of ourselves and what we needed, and actually to just sit down and have some time for ourselves, I think that it would have worked.

“Obviously other things happened.

“There were other factors that happened, that really hurt us both.

“But I thought I wouldn’t have let go of it.

“Never, never let go of it,” she said of her marriage to Kevin.

Karen went on to say that it took her a year to “let go” of her former partner.

Karen said that it was her pet dog Betty who helped her move on from her relationship, describing the pooch as her “saviour”.

She admitted that the pooch had rescued her from a dark period that followed her break up.

Knowing that she had to look after someone else made her get up and dressed, and step outside.

“I was in a hole. But my dog, I rescued her, but she rescued me,” Karen emotionally said of the rescue dog.
