Kate and William hold hands during rare royal PDA as they attend basketball game

Prince William and Kate Middleton showed off some rare royal PDA on Wednesday as they attended a basketball game in Boston on their first US visit in eight years.

On the first day of their tour, the Prince and Princess of Wales sat courtside at the TD Garden stadium, where they watched the Boston Celtics face off against Miami Heat alongside the team owner Wyc Grousbeck and wife Emilia Fazzalari.

The Royals stood for the US national anthem, joined by Massachusetts Governor-elect Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu before photographers snapped them holding hands as Kate rested her hand on her husband's knee.

Such public displays of affection are a rare occurrence in Royal circles, as the late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip set a precedent for what is expected, though that didn't stop Mike Tindall from embracing Zara Tindall on the I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here bridge last week.

Kate dazzled US fans in a vintage Chanel blazer, believed to be priced at over £4k, which she paired with jewellery by Laura Lombardi and Shyla London.

Despite boos and chants of “USA” from the stands, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were all smiles as they took pictures with fans.

It’s also expected that Prince William and Kate will meet with President Joe Biden before the Earthshot Awards on December 2.

During his first day in the US, Willam said: "On this, our first overseas visit since the death of my grandmother, I would like to thank the people of Massachusetts and particularly of Boston for their many tributes paid to the late Queen.

"She remembered her 1976 bicentennial visit with great fondness.

"My grandmother was one of life’s optimists. And so am I. That is why last year we launched the Earthshot Prize with the ambition to create a truly global platform to inspire hope and urgent optimism as we look to save the future of our planet.

"To the people of Boston, thank you. I’m so grateful to you for allowing us to host the second year of the Earthshot prize in your great city. Catherine and I can’t wait to meet many of you in the days ahead."

In another speech, the father-of-three added: “Like President Kennedy, Catherine and I firmly believe that we all have it in ourselves to achieve great things, and that human beings have the ability to lead, innovate and problem-solve,” William continued.

“We cannot wait to celebrate the Earthshot Prize finalists later on this week, and we are both looking forward to spending the next few days learning about the innovative ways the people of Massachusetts are tackling climate change."

The awards were created in 2021 in response to the growing threat of climate disaster and aims to find solutions by granting visionaries the funds they need for their work.
