Kate Garraway has revealed how she initially ignored her former Good Morning Britain colleague Piers Morgan’s advice after her husband fell ill with coronavirus.
During her husband Derek’s terrifying health battle, which saw him become the UK’s longest coronavirus in-patient, Kate, 53, documented the journey.
Kate’s memoirs were later created into a book, The Power of Hope. But, now her husband Derek is home, the TV star has revealed the book may never have happened.
Speaking to Iain Dale on LBC Radio on Thursday 29 April, Kate explained: “It was actually Piers Morgan who very early on…said ‘you've got to write this down’.”
Kate, who admitted she was worried her husband Derek would think she’s a stranger, went on: “And I didn't, really, because they're didn't seem time to write things down. But he said to just write words that you'll remember because…he said you won't remember some of these things.
“And also I was taking huge amounts of notes, so in the very early days when Derek was sick, and I was trying to get through to hospitals, you were getting different people each time, often people who weren't actually treating Derek, because they were too busy.”
She added: “I began to take lots of notes about things like oxygen levels, liver enzymes and everything, so I've got this strange sort of medical book.”
Despite her initial hesitation to take up Piers’ advice the journalist, who recently hinted he has landed Jon Snow’s Channel 4 job, has backed Kate’s book.
Piers proudly tweeted to urge fans to buy Kate’s memoir. He said: “This is such a fantastic book, powerful, moving, heart-breaking, inspiring, courageous and funny.
“Order from the link in her bio. She needs all our support and it’s a truly incredible story about the power of love and hope.”
It comes after Kate shared an update on her husband Derek after he returned home following his year-long stay in hospital.
Speaking on Zoe Ball's Radio 2 show on Wednesday 28 April, she said: “He isn't really able to speak at the moment so he can't tell them off.”

Kate shares children Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11, with husband Derek and has praised her kids for their reaction to Derek’s return.
“I have to be the bad guy!,” she joked, before admitting: “They are my heroes.
“They know instinctively how to talk to him but not ask too much from him,” she continued.
Kate also added how Derek is still in need of 24 hour care, with carers visiting the family around the clock, continuing: “The hope is he will be able to progress”.
