Kate Garraway says Prince William wasn’t able to console teary Derek over her MBE

Kate Garraway said her husband Derek Draper “burst into tears” as she was awarded an MBE – but Prince William was “not allowed” to console him.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 56, was officially handed the honour by the Prince of Wales, 41, during a ceremony at Windsor Castle on Wednesday to recognise her services to broadcasting, journalism and charity. Her proud husband Derek, 55, attended the ceremony to support his wife in a rare public appearance and was visibly moved by the occasion.

Derek’s life dramatically changed after contracting Covid-19 in 2020. He spent 13 months in hospital fighting for his life and was left needing round-the-clock care.

During Thursday’s episode of GMB, Kate described what happened behind the scenes at the MBE ceremony to her co-host Ben Shephard. She said: “Derek burst into tears.

“The lovely thing was Prince William said “how’s Derek?” and I said ‘here’s here!’ So we turned and saw and then obviously Derek was very tearful and then spoke about Jake [Derek’s carer] and gave Jake a wave as well.

She added: “Prince William said he wanted to go over but he’s not allowed to leave the rug. There’s a very fancy red and gold carpet that he stands on.

“It was lovely at the castle. There were so many people who wanted to shake Derek’s hand and say ‘my father, my husband my brother … what you’ve gone through has given us a lot of hope.

“Because they are dealing with things from Covid but also other things like cancer which are difficult. So I think he got a huge amount from it as well, which was very very lovely.”

Following her award presentation on Wednesday, Kate posed for a photo with Derek and her proud parents, Gordon and Marilyn Garraway.

Kate was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours list. Reacting to the news at the time, she said on Good Morning Britain: "I actually feel very awkward about it all really, I don't know why, because I'm thrilled to bits and incredibly honoured.

"But you just sort of think, 'What? Me?' And then you think it's not real."

Kate and Derek have been open about their struggles since 2020 in the award-winning documentaries Finding Derek and Caring For Derek. The couple, who share two children together, Darcey, 17, and William, 13, have been married since 2005.

Kate shared an emotional update on her husband's health earlier this month when she revealed her son was recently left in tears after Derek was able to interact with him.

In an appearance on Loose Women, Kate discussed how the family were making an effort to fill Derek’s days with “loads of good stuff” – going for walks and even managing to get him to the O2 to see Elton John.

She said: “You get fantastic moments where he will suddenly, this is so silly, but Billy had a new basketball and he was bouncing it. Suddenly Derek said: 'Is that a new ball?' and we all just went [shocked]. Billy was like: 'Yes, yes, yes it is!' and Derek said 'it's nice'.

"Seeing him able to interact, it's something you take for granted, but to have him to be able to interact in that way. Billy was in tears, they were hugging, it's things like that – they really lift you up."
