King Charles made a poignant reference to Prince Harry and his wife Meghan during his first speech to the nation since his mother The Queen’s death on Thursday.
In the televised address to the nation, he paid tribute to his wife Camilla, his son and now heir to the throne Prince William, and to his youngest child, Prince Harry, who has experienced a rocky relationship with his father in recent months.
During his speech King Charles said: “I want to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.”
The extension of an olive branch to his son marks the beginning of a new era, and once again shows King Charles' commitment to reconciling with his son, in the wake of their family tragedy.
The gesture also comes just days after Harry had declined an offer to spend part of his UK visit with his father, a move that had deeply saddened the monarch.
Harry and his father have not been on the best of terms since Harry stepped down from his royal duties and moved to the United States with his wife – but Charles was keen to remedy that during Harry's recent visit.
An insider told the Mirror: “He hasn’t wavered, despite the attacks, which seem to be coming with increased vigour.
“The Prince of Wales reiterated his invitation for Harry and Meghan, and the whole family if they wished, to come and stay with him this summer while he is at his home on the Balmoral estate.
“He thought it might be a good opportunity for everyone to take stock and relax, but the invitation was declined.”
During his maiden speech, Charles also spoke of “coming together as a nation” and described the loss of his mother as a “time for change for my family.”
This sense of unity was also echoed in his heartfelt tributes to his late mother, but also in his praise of wife Camilla for her "steadfast devotion to duty on which I have come to rely so much" as she takes on the new role of Queen consort.
He also paid an earnest tribute to Prince William and his wife Catherine as they too stepped into new roles as the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall alongside their existing titles.
