John Wick’s Lance Reddick shared how he considered Keanu Reeves and Ian McShane ‘family’ during promotional appearance just before his sudden death
It turns out Lance Reedick considered his two co-stars in the four John Wick films family, and that the family bond actually translated to their characters on screen.
The late actor, who only just passed away six days earlier, offered up what he thought was one of the secrets to the success of the popular film franchise during a pre-taped segment with co-stars Keanu Reeves and Ian McShane on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Thursday.
In fact, during the conversation, Reddick shared how the fourth installment leans on family more than ever.
‘Family’s such a huge theme in this particular film, more than any others [in the series] — literal family,’ he told the host, before sharing how it transcended to a bond between the three actors.
‘But also, you see, with the three of us, that it’s not just the family you’re born into, but the family you’ve created, and how much we really are family.’

McShane then interjected about the importance of director Chad Stahelski serving as director of all four films in helping shape that bond.
‘He [Reeves] and Chad have worked together for, you know, coming up on 30 years, or over 25 years,’ he said, in a reference to Stahelski’s work as Reeves’ stunt double and stunt co-ordinator in The Matrix film franchise.
‘So there’s a deep understanding of each other and a deep empathy for the story,’ McShane, 80, added, while also offering high praise to the man who created the characters. ‘And Derek Kolstad wrote something which I think has been very true, and expanded upon in a very mature way, and in a very adventurist way…’
During the appearance on the daytime talk show, Reddick also shared how he was struck by how beautiful John Wick 4 looked, ‘especially a film that moves so much and has so much almost relentless action.’
