Lorraine Kelly, 61, reacted on Twitter after she was accused of not mentioning St George’s Day on her show. The viewer in question hit out at the broadcaster and branded her “spiteful and disgusting”, before she denied the claim.

Taking to the micro-blogging site, the user fumed: “Disgusting that @reallorraine never mentioned St George’s Day today.

“For a Scotswoman that has moved her whole family to England, has worked in England for an English company, that is so spiteful & says so much about her. Burns night of course.”

Lorraine took the opportunity to respond to the accusation, as she confirmed their remarks were untrue.

The small-screen star explained that she honoured the celebratory day at the start of her programme.

Retweeting the post, Lorraine hit out in view of her 644,000 followers as she denied the claims.

She penned: “Normally don’t respond to this sort of thing BUT… Mentioned it right at the top of the show and also with our Andi [Peters] so ‘keep the heid’ as we say in Scotland.”

The phrase “keep the heid” is a Scottish phrase used to mean take time out for yourself.

Fans were quick to comment on the post, as people came to Lorraine’s defence.

One wrote: “There’s always one! Have a lovely day Lorraine.”

“Happy St George’s day Lorraine,” another commented, while a third added: “Eloquently put.”

Another penned: “Good for you Lorraine. Some people are just looking for reasons to be offended. Such a lovely day, we’re emerging from this pandemic; it’s time to celebrate & count our blessings. You’re a joy, carry on!”

A fifth added: “Hate the haters!”

At the start of her programme, Lorraine opened the show celebrating the Feast of Saint.

She said: “Hello, everybody and Happy St George’s Day,” before detailing what was coming up on her programme.

Also known as the Feast of St George, England’s national day is celebrated on April 23 each year.

According to legend, St George killed a dragon and saved a princess while serving as a soldier in the Roman army.

Across the country, people are honouring the patron saint of England by flying English flags and celebrating our heritage.

Social media users have flocked to the micro-blogging site in honour of today’s celebration.

Footballer Harry McGuire penned: “Happy #StGeorgesDay! Always proud to represent our country.”

While Keir Starmer offered: “This #StGeorgesDay, I want to thank everyone in England who has worked so hard to keep us safe over the last year. Your service and commitment means there is now light at the end of the tunnel. On behalf of @UKLabour, thank you to all on the frontline.”

Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV at 9am.
