Lucy Spraggan ‘blown away’ by messages of support following homophobic abuse on holiday

Lucy Spraggan’s recent trip to Malta with her girlfriend was cut short after the couple were subjected to homophobic abuse.

Lucy, 30, opened up about their experiences on Instagram, and explained that prior to their trip, she was under the impression that a lot of Malta was LGBTQ+ friendly.

However, Lucy and her girlfriend received several comments about their relationship when out together, leading to the pair ending their holiday early.

Following her horrific revelations on social media, Lucy has received dozens of messages of support from people including from the Maltese community and the country's minister for equality.

Chloe Madeley commented on her post: “Absolutely disgusting behaviour and Im with you, it’s sickening that anyone ever had to deal with it at all, let alone now, in 2021, after a worldwide pandemic and a new appreciation of the human experience. I’m sorry for you both.”

Another person penned to Lucy: “I’m so sorry that this is still happening in this day and age. There must be something very wrong in these people’s lives for them to think that this behaviour is ok.”

“I hope the spa experience was awesome and I hope that on your next holiday your both made to feel welcome (like you should be everywhere),” they continued.

Lucy has since shared a second post where she thanked people for their support – something which she said she was “blown away by”.

Part of her post read: “I have been blown away by the incredible influx of love from the Maltese community who are so upset by our experience, including the minister for equality in Malta.”

“So many kind words and apologies on behalf of the homophobic and misogynistic men we came across,” the singer continued.

Lucy opened up about her experiences in Malta to her 173,000 followers on Friday, 22 October. On Instagram, Lucy shared a photo of herself and her girlfriend (whose face was covered with a heart emoji) while on their short-lived holiday.

Alongside the photo she wrote: “First day we arrived we realised we’d landed in the wrong part of town – every other bar was a ‘gentlemen’s club’ and it was clearly a party destination, and everywhere we went someone shouted ‘lesbians’ at us."

In the post she continued: “The woman on the desk in the first hotel said she completely understood why we didn’t want to stay there and let us leave early. Same day we went to a restaurant in Valletta where the waiter said: ‘the way you girls are sitting is so sexy, you are making us all hard’. Yeah. Word for word.”

Lucy revealed how they received further abuse as men starting making homophobic hand gestures and shouting at them.

The Sober singer went on to say that she’s “sick to f*****g death of feeling threatened as a woman”, as well as feeling threatened as a lesbian.

After ending their trip early, the couple decided to go to a spa instead.
