Matt Lucas, 47, has hit back after he was accused of being “offensive” after putting on a German accent for last night’s Great British Bake Off. Last night the remaining bakers tackled German week, rustling up German biscuits, an eight-layered Prince Regent chocolate cake, and a yeast-leavened cake.

To celebrate, Matt and his co-host Noel Fielding opened the show dressed as German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk and performed with German accents.

When one viewer asked fellow social media users if imitating a German accent was “offensive”, Matt pointed out that he is, in fact, Anglo-German.

Responding to the tweet, which has now been deleted, Matt wrote: “I am Anglo-German. I am a citizen of both countries, with passports for each, so I’ll do a ropey German accent any time I like.

“Mind you, I’ll probably also do a French accent and an Italian one, if I fancy. Cause, acting, innit.”(sic).

Fans of the comic agreed with his statement, with one of his followers assuring: “I’m German and there’s absolutely nothing offensive there!

“Personally I get a bit annoyed when people try to classify German as nothing but aggressive, but that’s stereotypes for ya.”(sic).

Another agreed: “I didn’t find it offensive. I expected a reaction from the people who try to find offence in everything these days.”

During the latest episode, Italian baker Giuseppe was crowned Star Baker for a second time following an almost perfect instalment for the engineer, while German baker Jurgen came in a close second.

However, fans claimed they spotted tension between amateur baker Jurgen and host Matt last night on the programme.

Jurgen was tipped to win star baker during the show’s first-ever German week. However, he surprisingly came fourth in the technical challenge which was won by Italian baker Giuseppe.

Many had predicted Jurgen would be the one to produce perfect bakes.

But, eagle-eyed viewers believed they had spotted a secret feud between Matt and fan favourite Jurgen during a tense exchange on Tuesday’s episode.

Daniel Bevis agreed: “Considering how terrible his faux ‘German’ accent is tonight, I’m not surprised the only actual German here is a bit miffed with him”.

At the bottom of the table, Freya was given the boot after her showstopper yeast-leavened cake was deemed “too doughy” by judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood.

After Matt announced Freya’s fate, the 19-year-old, who is the show’s first-ever vegan baker, burst into tears and was comforted by her fellow contestants.

Following her exit, the Yorkshire native said that taking part was the “best experience of my life”, before saying how proud she was of her achievements due to her “lack of experience” with baking.

However, many audience members were furious after George was spared despite serving up actual raw dough.
