Meghan Markle is giving away 2,000 free copies of her new book The Bench to schools and libraries across America.

The Duchess of Sussex, who reportedly made a private phone call to Kate Middleton to end the royal feud, celebrated her book's release on Tuesday 8 June and has now shared her plans to donate copies.

The news was shared on Meghan, 39, and her husband Prince Harry's Archewell Foundation website.

The organisation said it is "taking a moment to recognise and support the amazing changemakers who are fostering community, compassion, and connection for every child."

Archewell is collaborating with First Book – a non-profit organisation which distributes more than 200 million books to children from low-income households in the US.

A statement on the website explained: "After more than a year of unprecedented challenges for school kids and families everywhere, The Duchess believes the path ahead must include a focus on well-being – and nourishing our communities through food, education, and emotional and mental health support.

"At Archewell, that is often centered on food and essential needs (as evidenced by our partnership with organisations like World Central Kitchen) but also nourishment through learning and connection (as seen in The Duchess’s support of last year’s Save With Stories initiative to raise funds for educational resources like books, toys, and worksheets).

"As an example of this belief system, The Duchess and Archewell have received the support of the publisher of The Bench to distribute 2,000 copies at no cost to libraries, community centers, schools, and nonprofit programs across the country."

Meghan announced the book earlier this year and said it initially started out as a poem before being turned into a book.

She explained: "The Bench started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father's Day, the month after Archie was born. That poem became this story."

"My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the makeup, as much as it does with me."

The 34-page book gives readers an insight into the couple’s new family life in the US with illustrations by Christian Robinson of the father and son spotted feeding the chickens similar to the mother-of-two's family home in LA.

Customers have been able to pre-order the highly-anticipated book for months via Amazon and the WH Smith website, which has made it the number one bestseller on the online store.

Meghan has also released an audio version of The Bench to accompany the physical copy.
