Monty Don returns to the BBC tonight for his new series Adriatic Gardens, where gardening fans will get a chance to see the horticulturist visit stunning landscapes across Europe. The Gardeners’ World host has now addressed a common issue that has affected many households who keep plants indoors.

Speaking on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show today, the 60-year-old offered his top tip which will halt individuals from “drowning” and ultimately killing their plants.

The on-screen star chatted candidly with presenter Sam Pinkham, who naturally quizzed the horticulturist on his gardening expertise.

He asked: “You can drown a plant, can’t you? You can definitely overwater them.”

“Yes, you can. Most house plants die from drowning,” Monty explained.

He continued: “The biggest mistake that people can make with their house plant is to overwater them.

“By and large your best bet is to water them no more than once a week. Give them a soak, let them drain properly and don’t water them again until they dry out.”

The gardening expert advised that house plants will remain healthy if the air remains moist.

He added another tip for garden lovers to ensure they don’t “kill off” their plants.

The BBC favourite remarked: “Just spray them with a mister. Always spray the leaves and not the root.

Sam was left stunned as he gushed over Monty’s gardening tip.

“That is a brilliant tip. That’s awesome,” he uttered.

The radio presenter added that Monty’s advice was “life-changing” after admittedly “killing off” plants by watering them daily.

The BBC star explained: “In our house, we have two to three misters by each one of our plants.

“Everyday I give them a really good spray so that they are running with water.”

He added: “When you water them don’t water them into a pot with a saucer sitting underneath because you don’t want to spoil the furniture and otherwise they will just be sitting in water.

“Water [your house plants] in the sink and then drain them completely before putting them back.”

Elsewhere, Monty took to Twitter to share a post about his new series.

In view of his 247,000 followers, he penned: “Banish winter and luxuriate in sun, beauty and glorious gardens. Starting tonight 8pm BBC2.”
