Nadia Sawalha gushes over ‘amazing’ husband Mark as he prepares for his 17th sober Christmas

Loose Women’s Nadia Sawalha has branded her husband Mark Adderley as "amazing" ahead of his 17th Christmas sober.

Mark put down the drink almost two decades ago, which Nadia says he did for her and their two daughters, Kiki, 14, and Maddie, 18.

Discussing Mark’s success, Nadia told OK!: “He’s amazing in a way that he shares what goes on with him.

“He’s actually doing a counselling course at the moment and is going to do an MA in addiction counselling. Not to earn money from it – but just to be able to help people further.”

“The easiest way to stay well is to help other people, and he’s just incredible,” she added.

Undeniably, many people enjoy a Christmas tipple over the festive period and, while Mark finds it difficult this time of year, Nadia said her husband of almost 20 years stays sober for her and their daughters.

Nadia told us: “It is (a difficult time for Mark), but for moments like when we’re walking past a cosy pub – but he knows where it takes him.

“It’s first thought, second thought: first thought is, oh how lovely to go in there for a cosy port and lemon, but the second thought is where will that end up because one is too many, and 100 is never enough.

“He knows he loses everything. He stays sober for us – me and our girls. That’s why he stays sober.”

At the time of Mark’s sobriety anniversary on 28 October, Nadia shared a heartfelt post on social media congratulating him.

She penned at the time: “Feel so emotional this morning… Seventeen years ago today my super smart, funny, kind, loving, tortured, talented husband @mark_adderley put down alcohol for good. For me. For his daughters. For all those that loved him. NOT for himself.

“He couldn’t for himself. Alcohol had unwittingly, right from his very first drink, been his medication for the agonies of Bi polar 2 and depression.”

“Mark only got his diagnosis this year when he was told that he would have been trying to deal with his illness since he was five or six years old . It breaks my heart that alcohol became the answer for his emotional agony,” Nadia continued.

“I truly believe that if Mark hadn’t chosen AA and a sober life he wouldn’t be with us today.”

The Loose Women panellist went on to detail Mark’s journey over the past 17 years, and revealed that his alcohol addiction nearly caused her to “give up on (their) marriage”.

“Once Mark knew, really knew, that he would lose me and his girls forever if he didn’t give it up for good. He did. It was very tough. But he did it for all of us. So he could be the best dad. The best husband. The best son he could,” Nadia said.

She continued: “Me and the girls want to celebrate you and what you do one day at a time. You are our hero.

“Thank you for your sobriety and for being the funniest, kindest , smartest person I know.”
