BBC Weather presenter Matt Taylor, 44, has taken to Twitter to defend his BBC Breakfast co-star Naga Munchetty, 46, after a viewer took a swipe at her on the social media platform today. It comes after Naga and her co-host Charlie Stayt, 58, sparked 100 official complaints to the broadcaster about their behaviour during an appearance on Saturday Kitchen last weekend.

Amid the backlash, Matt insisted that Naga is “the loveliest of people” despite the “banter” they have on the show together.

The meteorologist spoke out after a BBC Breakfast viewer claimed Matt had “drawn the short straw” by working alongside the BBC Radio 5 Live host on the morning programme.

They penned: “@MetMattTaylor See you’ve drawn the short straw and on this morning with @TVNaga01.

“Hope she’s kind to you but if not give as good as you get.”

Matt was quick to defend Naga in response to the Twitter user’s comment, replying: “Not at all – I love working with Naga.

“We may have a little bit of banter on air, but she is honestly the loveliest of people and hugely respects what I do. Have a good weekend.”

Naga seemed to appreciate Matt’s support, as she wrote back: “Love ya matey xx.”

Meanwhile, a post on the BBC’s complaints website acknowledged that viewers “who were unhappy with the guests in this [weekend’s] edition” of Saturday Kitchen, starring Naga and Charlie, had been in contact with them.

In response to the backlash, they said: “Saturday Kitchen Live’s format allows for an informal chatty style and the guests are encouraged to feel relaxed in the studio.

“Some viewers found the behaviour and comments of the guests this week to be inappropriate and that they were rude to presenter Matt.

“We appreciate the feedback and we shared it with the Saturday Kitchen team.”

Although the statement does not name the guests, Munchetty and Stayt were the only stars who were in the studio to film the programme.

Some Saturday Kitchen viewers branded the pair “rude” and “disruptive” towards host and chef Matt Tebbutt.

During one moment of the show, Matt asked: “You’ve had a tough year right?” To which Naga replied: “Everyone’s had a tough year.”

“Everyone’s had a tough year, but to read for three to four hours a day that news – it’s pretty hard going,” he continued.

Charlie said in response: “You’ve really brought the tone down, haven’t you? I thought you were going to ask ‘what’s it like getting up in the morning?’ but you’ve gone -”

Naga then interrupted and quipped that guest chef Yotam Ottolenghi would make a better host than Matt.

She said: “For everyone who wants to turn off the news and might want a bit of relaxation, don’t tune into Saturday Kitchen, it’s not worth it! Yotam’s going to take over and then it’s going to be loads better.”

However, some viewers disagreed with the complaints about Naga and Charlie.

One person tweeted: “Can’t help but laugh at the Twitter rage on #SaturdayKitchen at Naga & Charlie. I think @matt_tebbutt has handled the banter with bashful good grace.”

Another viewer said: “I think the teasing that Matt usually courts is what makes the show fresh and entertaining… Best TV I’ve seen in ages. Laughed so much. Well done Naga and Charlie. Don’t listen to the negative comments. X.”
