'NCIS' Fans Are Chanting Gibbs’ Name After a 'NCIS: Hawai'i' Plot Twist Is Revealed

Gibbs (Mark Harmon) may have retired from NCIS, but everywhere folks look he’s still there. After McGee (Sean Murray) and Palmer (Brian Dietzen) were inducted into the Leroy Jethro Gibbs College Scholarship Fund, news came to light that the former special agent in charge also had a hand in helping Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) find her way to NCIS: Hawai’i.

It all began on Monday night when the latest addition to the CBS drama franchise NCIS: Hawai’i aired a special episode titled “Spies, Part 2” to conclude a two-parter that began Sunday night. The weekly case was particularly personal for Tennant because it was an investigation into her former mentor, C.I.A. operative Maggie Shaw (Julie White), who was accused of abetting a Chinese spy.

A series of flashbacks gave more context for Maggie and Tennant’s relationship. After Maggie recruited Tennant, Maggie was relocated without her. Before leaving, Maggie gave Tennant a business card that would come in handy — and it belonged to none other than Gibbs himself!

As it turns out, the two had crossed paths with Gibbs during an operation in Kabul. Tennant remembered him as the NCIS agent with “Marine haircut” and “snarky sidekick” (A.K.A. Tony DiNozzo!). But she actually “made quite an impression on him” because he tried to nab Tennant from Maggie. Now that she was moving on, she felt it was time that Tennant met with Gibbs — and that’s how she entered the world of NCIS.

After NCIS and NCIS: Hawai’i fans made this unexpected discovery, many took to Twitter to express their shock about how Gibbs’ influence is still felt long after his departure. “Wait? What? Jethro Gibbs recruited Tennant? Seriously?” one person tweeted. “Leroy [Jethro] Gibbs!!! The only one!!” another added. “Love it! I miss Gibbs so much,” a different fan said. “Thank you for honoring Gibbs! ❤️,” a follower commented on Instagram.

Since NCIS: Hawai’i joined the NCIS lineup in September 2021, Special Agent in Charge Jane Tennant has led her five-person team to solve cases in the Aloha state. Before this recent revelation though, not much was known about Tennant except that she was born in Hawai’i, she graduated from the University of Virginia and after college she joined the CIA where she met Maggie.

Having put her ex-mentor in the past, Tennant is more than ready to meet other NCIS special agents who were also guided by Gibbs. ICYMI: NCIS stars Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) and Knight (Katrina Law) will soon head to Hawai’i to help Tennant and her team in a special NCIS/NCIS: Hawai’i crossover coming in March.
