Ruth Langsfords physical pain over empty nest as son, 20, leaves for uni

Ruth Langsford has described the "physical pain" she experienced when her 20 year old son Jack went off to university.

The This Morning presenter, 62, said it felt like her “womb had been ripped out” in the weeks after saying goodbye to 20-year-old Jack, who she shares with husband Eamonn Holmes.

She even admitted that she had taken to "sniffing his pillow" and "keeping his bedroom door shut so I could imagine he was in there."

Speaking in an interview with Woman and Home magazine, Ruth said: “I truly understand the pain of empty nest syndrome.

“The day we dropped off Jack at university, we said goodbye and, as we got around the corner, I burst into tears.

"It sounds dramatic but for the next three days, I felt like I’d had my womb ripped out. It was pain.

“I was sitting on his bed, sniffing his pillow, and I kept his bedroom door shut so I could imagine he was in there.”

It seems that she has now gotten used to her son being away at university, saying: "Now it's great. Jack seems so happy and I don't get as upset each time he comes home and then leaves again."

In the same interview, Ruth discussed her marriage to her husband of 12 years Eamonn, who she presented Friday's This Morning slot with for years until they were axed last year.

She said: "Eamonn and I don't fall out over big things. On our anniversary, he peeled off the foil cover on a plastic milk bottle, left it wet-side down on the worktop, poured his tea and off he went.

"Things like that can send me into a rage. I said, 'How can your brain tell you that's all right?' Eamonn's mum had five boys and did everything for them, whereas I went to boarding school and so I was a lot more practical, so we're quite different."

Ruth made her grand comeback to This Morning this week, where she's presenting alongside old show favourite Rylan Clark, 33, as part of a roster of guest presenters whilst Holly Willoughby, Phillip Schofield, Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary take a summer break.

Ruth and Rylan's temporary return has delighted fans with one person tweeting: "The best TV presenters by a million miles, loving Ruth and Rylan they are just so natural and not false."

Another wrote: "Ruth & Rylan you 2 are the best and have really made me smile today , please stay on this morning .. it’s time for a change".

A third person said: "Love Rylan and Ruth. best week so far! #thismorning," while a third echoed: "Wow this is fantastic. Rylan and Ruth are on !!!!! Have them on again Pleassseeeeee."
