Simon Cowell’s engagement tinged with sadness as his mum is no longer here, says brother Tony

Music mogul Simon Cowell finally popped the question and asked his partner Lauren Silverman to marry him after 13 years of dating, it was recently revealed.

The Britain's Got Talent legend, 62, asked Lauren, 44, to become his wife in secret on Christmas Eve during their Barbados holiday in front of their son Eric, seven, and Lauren’s 16-year-old son, Adam.

And Simon's brother Tony, 72, tells OK! that Lauren – who has been seen sporting an oval-shaped diamond ring estimated to be worth £2.5million – rang him up at 4:30am to tell him how "happy she was" after Simon proposed.

Recalling how he felt after being told the exciting news, he told us: "The moment I put the phone down, I thought of our mum, Julie. I know she would have been overjoyed to hear the news.

"So, for me, it was vaguely tinged with sadness, given that Mum will not be able to see Simon tying the knot."

He continued: "Mum desperately wanted Simon to settle down with a family and had only just got to know Lauren before she sadly passed away in 2015.”

Tony added that it was only a matter of time until he and Lauren were getting engaged: "Since having his son Eric, Simon has completely changed the way he lives his life, and for the first time, he appears to be genuinely happy and content.

“Lauren has played a huge part in Simon’s sudden change of heart over marriage.

"She has certainly been his rock over the past few years, and never left his hospital bedside following his horrific back injury in 2020 – which was a very worrying time for all of us.”

Tony, who has been by Simon’s side throughout all of his previous relationships, says he’s happy that it’s Lauren who he will be calling his sister-in-law.

“I am very fond of Lauren, and so is all my family,” he said.

“Over the years, Simon has had a host of different girlfriends, but when it finally came to choosing someone to be his wife, it was only ever going to be Lauren.”

It comes after it was reported Simon spent "£250,000 on stunning ring for his fiancée".

A source told The Sun: "Lauren had given some strong hints about the kind of ring she wanted and Simon, not being stupid, took notice.

"He chose the diamond himself, after getting some professional advice, and went down on one knee whilst on the beach."

The source added: "Both Lauren and Simon have been bombarded with messages of congratulation — they’re both super-excited.”
