Floor manager Niall Jackson dropped the bombshell on Twitter when he told his followers it was Simon McCoy’s “final week”. As social media users queried the tweet, the newsreader confirmed he was leaving. Niall tweeted: “If you think he’s a handful on-screen, imagine what he’s like off it?

“Only got to floor manage 4 years of his 17+ at @BBCNews so was nice to do his final week.

“Made the dreariest of heavy news days instantly more manageable.

“May the road rise up to meet you @BBCSimonMcCoy Sláinte.”

In response to this, the 59-year-old BBC veteran wrote: “Thank you Niall, I shall miss you.”

A fan went on to query if this meant he was leaving, to which he replied: “After 18 years… last day today.”

A BBC spokesperson has confirmed today is Simon’s last at the company.

Sam Taylor, Head of Live & Breaking for BBC News, told Express.co.uk: “Sharp, funny and a great colleague – it has been a delight to have Simon at the helm of the BBC News Channel and BBC News at One.

“We’ll miss his one-liners, pregnant pauses and commitment to breaking news in every form, and wish him the very best for the future.”

Newsreader Alex Lovell hinted the news had come as a surprise.

She added: “I’m sorry to share this Twitter fam’ but it looks like our amazing, funny and brilliant @BBCSimonMcCoy is leaving the Beeb.

“Simon, I have the pleasure of calling you a colleague and friend.

“You’ll be so missed on the BBC – good luck with your next adventure.”

Meteorologist Matt Taylor shared a video of Simon being ***** towards weatherman Nick Miller.

As the latter asked him a question about wildfires, he replied with a straight face: “Well you tell me.”

Matt wrote alongside the clip: “With @BBCSimonMcCoy deserting us all after today and taking his cheekiness with him, this exchange with @WeatherNick had to be shared again [crying with laughter emojis].

“Good luck Simon, we’ll miss the laughs.”

The news presenter was known for his cheeky comments and gaffes live on air.

In one memorable moment, he previously queried how Prince William and Kate Middleton’s third baby announcement was net the time booked off!”

Simon also struggled to control his laughter as he read out a report which said Pippa Middleton had given birth “to a baby”.

Other fans have reacted to his departure on social media today.

One commented: “I think I speak for everyone when I say I hope Simon McCoy ends up at GMB rather than GBN.”

A second added: “I’m acc so sad Simon Mccoy is leaving the bbc.”(sic)

“Absolutely devastated that Simon McCoy is leaving the BBC. Without doubt my favourite news broadcaster,” a third added.
