Simon Reeve: BBC presenter eats buffalo faeces after crew member served mystery ‘stew’

The One Show: Simon Reeve discusses making new series

Author and television presenter Simon Reeve is well known for his adventures overseas, everything from exploring stunning locations in the Indian Ocean to walking through minefields. The father-of-one has since dished on the weird and wonderful cuisines he has endured while filming abroad.

The 48-year-old recalled a bizarre moment a member of his film crew was served buffalo stew, but unbeknownst to Simon he was in for a surprise.

The small-screen star has eaten some “weird stuff” during his travels, but one that plays heavily on his mind was during a trip to South Asia.

“We were crossing the mountains in Laos, and we stopped in a cafe by the side of the road,” Simon explained.

“The guys we were with were completely knackered.”

He continued: “One of them ordered a plate of food and out came this steaming spinach.

“Or at least that’s what I thought it was.”

Simon was left stunned, as he explained: “It was a pile of buffalo poo.

“Buffalo poo for goodness sake! What on earth is going on on this planet?”

Despite his shock, the documentary-filmmaker claimed “we only live once” and had a taste.

Speaking about the stew, Simon remarked: “It had been cooked through and cooked well.

“To be totally honest, I had to have a try because life’s too short to not give the local grub a bit of a munch.”

Simon’s exploration into unfamiliar cuisines didn’t stop there as he gave an insight into other delicacies he has devoured overseas after visiting over 130 countries.

“I’ve eaten some weird stuff around the world,” Simon explained.

“Penis soup, BBQ rat… any and everything and I say bring it on. Just memories and experiences.

“If it’s been cooked properly it’s hardly ever going to kill you.”

He added: “I only ever get food poisoning when I come back and have some club sandwich from a dodgy motorway cafe.”

Simon added: “I’m always keen to try funny food abroad because it’s happy memories, but the buffalo poo is not something I can massively recommend.

“Even the penis soup in Madagascar I would steer clear of for the second time, I think.”

Meanwhile, the BBC author and presenter is giving viewers a chance to get an in-depth insight into his adventures in a new four-part series, Incredible Journeys with Simon Reeve.

Incredible Journeys with Simon Reeve airs tonight on BBC One at 8pm.
