JK Rowling has reacted to Russian President Vladimir Putin after he compared his country to the Harry Potter author because it was being “cancelled”. Rowling has been heavily criticised for her remarks about transgender people.
In a new televised meeting, Putin went on a lengthy rant in which he claimed there was a campaign against Russian composers such as Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich.
“Today they are trying to cancel a whole thousand-year culture – our people,” he said.
“They are banning Russian writers and books.”
Putin said that similarly, Rowling was being cancelled by society because she “didn’t satisfy the demands of gender rights”.
The author, who also uses the pen name, Robert Galbraith, strongly refused the politician’s claims.
She retweeted a BBC article about Alexei Navalny, a Russian anti-corruption campaigner who is currently in jail.
“Critiques of Western cancel culture are possibly not best made by those currently slaughtering civilians for the crime of resistance, or who jail and poison their critics. #IStandWithUkraine,” wrote Rowling.
