Soccer Legend Pele Hospitalized for Colon Tumor Chemotherapy

The three-time World Cup winner is in ‘stable’ condition after being taken to Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein hospital to receive treatment in relation to a tumor in his colon.

AceShowbizPele has been hospitalized in relation to a tumor in his colon. The three-time World Cup winner was taken to Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein hospital on Wednesday, December 7 to undergo chemotherapy treatment.

Following the chemo, the former Brazilian soccer player’s medical team said in a statement that the star is “stable.” The statement added, “The patient is expected to be released in the coming days.” However, no specific details regarding the seriousness of his tumor were shared.

Pele, widely considered to be one of the greatest footballers of all time, previously underwent surgery to remove the tumor in his right colon in early September. “Last Saturday I underwent surgery to remove a suspicious lesion in the right colon,” he wrote in an Instagram post, which was originally in Portuguese. “The tumor was identified during the tests I mentioned last week.”

“Fortunately, I’m used to celebrating great victories alongside you,” Pele added. “I will face this match with a smile on my face, a lot of optimism and joy for living surrounded by the love of my family and friends.”

Pele spent a month in the hospital following the medical procedure. Less than a week after he’s back home, his daughter Kely Nascimento confirmed that her dad had suffered “a little step back.”

Taking to her Instagram account, Kely wrote in Portuguese and English, “My father is recovering well and within normal range. Promise!” She shared, “The normal recovery scenario for a man of his age, after an operation like this, is sometimes two steps forward and one step back.” She added, “Yesterday he was tired and took a little step back. Today he took two forwards!”

Pele himself gave an update on his condition in late September. “When the path is difficult, celebrate each step of the journey,” Pele, whose real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, wrote via Instagram.

“Focus on your happiness. It’s true that I can’t jump anymore, but these past few days, I’ve been punching the air more times than usual,” he noted. He then thanked his fans for their outpouring support as saying, “Thanks also to all of you, who from afar, make my life complete with so many messages of love.”

In mid-November, Pele assured his fans that he’s “fine” by sharing a photo of him pumping his fist into the air. Along with the image, he penned, “Dear friends, it’s been a while since we talked about this. I want to let you know that I’m fine. I feel better every day.”

“I don’t think even the mask for my protection can hide my happiness,” Pele continued. The soccer legend, who is said to have scored over 1,000 times with Guinness World Records estimating the number is as high as 1,279 goals, concluded his post, “Thank you very much to all of you who send me good energy daily.”
