Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden won a BAFTA Cymru at last night’s prestigious award ceremony. The Welsh professional dancer thanked fans from the bottom of her heart in a video update, which she shared online from the set of the ballroom and Latin dancing show.

Amy won the award for her documentary Strictly Amy: Crohn’s & Me, which gave viewers an insight into her battle with lifelong condition Crohn’s disease.

She went up against Rod Gilbert: Stand Up to Infertility, Critical: Coronavirus in Intensive Care, and Black and Welsh, in the single documentary category.

“I can’t believe I’m a BAFTA winner!!!

“Thank you so much!” Amy wrote online following the news.

Alongside her video, the emotional 31-year-old told her 273,000 Instagram followers that she was feeling a little tearful accepting the accolade.

She wrote on the picture-sharing site: “I am soooo thrilled (a little bit tearful) to win a BAFTA for my documentary Strictly Amy: Crohn’s & Me.(sic)

“Thank you to everyone at Wildflame TV and @bbccymruwales @bbc for all your support, my family, Ben and of course all my brave fellow IBD sufferers for sharing their stories.

“I want to dedicate this award to beautiful Bethan and thank you to the James family for sharing Bethan’s story.

“This is such an important film for the IBD community and I hope it has helped many more people understand this chronic condition.

“Diolch @baftacymru still in disbelief,” she signed off

Her Strictly colleagues rushed to the comments section of her post to congratulate the star.

“You are such an inspiration! Congratulations!!! I am so proud to call u a friend,”(sic) said Aljaz Skorjanec.

“CONGRATULATIONS beautiful lady!!!” added his wife, It Takes Two host Janette Manrara.

“That’s amazing Amy congratulations,” said former pro Kevin Clifton, along with several clapping emojis and a heart.

“Well done sweetheart!” his girlfriend, former Strictly champion and documentary maker Stacey Dooley chipped in.

Amy’s co-star and pal Dianne Buswell was also emotional on hearing the news.

“So proud of you Amy!!!! I’m tearful myself. Your such an inspiration to everybody and raising so much awareness. Love you and proud is an understatement,”(sic) she added.

Fellow pros Giovanni Pernice, Oti Mabuse, Johannes Radebe, Jowita Przystal, Nancy Xu, and Luba Mushtuk all shared their congratulations on the post.

“What a woman!” remarked Katya Jones.

“Huge congratulations to my BAFTA WINNING PRO @Amy_dowden,” her Strictly 2021 partner Tom Fletcher proudly wrote online.

His wife Giovanna added: “Yes @amy_dowden! A blooming BAFTA!! So happy for you. Sharing your own story will have helped so many understand. But also given comfort to those going through their own journey. Huge love to you!”
