The Crown ‘sparks row over plans to show replica of car from Princess Diana crash’

The Crown are reportedly prepared to be faced with "a row" over their plans to show a replica of the mangled car for the scenes of Princess Diana's death.

On August 31 in 1997, Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed died as their car crashed at the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris.

In pictures obtained by the Daily Mail, the black Mercedes replica shows the front wheel has buckled, with the bonnet crushed and the dashboard hanging out of the front windscreen.

The car was believed to be transported in secret under tarpaulin to Paris for filming last year.

In October, Netflix crews in Paris were seen reconstructing Diana's final journey and scenes are said to also show investigators examining the wreckage.

Netflix said of their decision to film the crash: "The exact moment of the crash impact will not be shown."

But a source has told the Mail: "I think a lot of people will find it quite sick that they went into such detail to recreate how the car was smashed up.

"I think it's going to cause a lot of upset with the Royal Family. If it was any other family I'm not sure they'd do it."

OK! approached Netflix for comment.

Dodi Fayed and the driver, Henri Paul, 41, died instantly in the crash. Diana was taken to hospital and later died of her injuries, while bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones was the only survivor.

The Crown has faced much backlash, particularly with the scenes of Diana, played by Elizabeth Debicki, showing the late princess sitting down for her infamous 1995 Panorama interview with Martin Bashir.

Among the critics was Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, as he said he felt "uneasy" watching his sister’s portrayal in the hit drama series.

He previously said he had fears that viewers will "forget it is fiction" and regard the scenes as fact.

It comes after royal expert Jennie Bond told OK! her thoughts on series five, which saw Diana and Charles' scenes.

“Dominic West has taken Charles to the other extreme. He’s too stern," she said of Charles' portrayal – played by Dominic West. "It’s very well-acted, but it’s an unfaithful portrayal of Charles.”

Jennie added: "With Elizabeth Debicki, they’ve made her look extremely like Diana but her mannerisms are far too exaggerated.

"Diana used to do this thing where she bent her head and looked up through her fringe, but Elizabeth Debicki does it the whole time. It’s too much.”

Many will recall actress Emma Corrin, 26, playing Diana in the previous series, but it was announced that Elizabeth would take over for the fifth and sixth series.
