These are the most-Googled stars of 2022

_

A beer company once touted a man as the “most interesting” person the world. According to Google Trends, that’s nonsense, at least when it comes to searches. With the end of the year upon us, the search giant revealed its most-Googled celebrities of 2022, dubbing it the “Year In Search.” And — drumroll, please — the most-Googled celebrity of the year was none other than Johnny Depp. The reason isn’t too surprising, as his bombshell defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard was all over the headlines. Amber, by the way, was the third most searched celebrity of the year, and the trial verdict was the seventh most searched term of the entire year. Per Google, more people searched “Johnny Depp verdict” than “Texas school shooting.”

Will Smith was the second most searched celebrity on Google this year, overwhelming due to his infamous Oscars slap of former friend Chris Rock. Chris was the fourth most searched celebrity on Google for the same reason. The incident was also the ninth biggest news story of the year, according to searches, even coming in ahead of “Roe v. Wade.”

It should come as no surprise that Queen Elizabeth II was of interest to Google users this year. “Queen Elizabeth passing” was the second most Googled moment of the year, only behind “Ukraine.” Her Sept. 8 death was the most-Googled passing of 2022.

Betty White’s January 2022 death was of huge interest to the Internet. As far as deaths go, she had the second most searched passing… second only to the queen.

_

Jada Pinkett Smith’s name was top of mind with Google users, which was a direct result of her husband slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. Will Smith, you’ll recall, hit Chris after the comedian made a joke at Jada’s expense. She was the fifth most searched actor of 2022.

_

There’s a bit of a morbid reason that Evan Peters’ name was among the most Googled this year. The star was so good at portraying the titular serial killer on the Netflix series “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” that it was hard to separate the seventh most searched actor of 2022 from the real-life criminal. Meanwhile, “Jeffrey Dahmer” was the overall ninth most searched term of the year, coming in just behind “iPhone 14.”

_

Andrew Garfield was the eighth most searched actor on the planet in 2022 due to his role as Detective Jeb Pyre on the FX true-crime drama “Under the Banner of Heaven.” These pictures of him in Bali didn’t hurt either.

Anne Heche’s death in August was bizarre is so many ways, and Google users were interested to learn more. Hers was the third most searched death of the year.

_

America’s TV dad was a Google legend even after he was gone. Bob Saget’s January death was the fourth most searched passing of the year.

_

Julia Fox seemed to come out of nowhere when she dated Kanye West in the early part of the year. Naturally, people were very interested in her, making her the ninth most searched actor of 2022. The actress-artist and the rapper-designer split after just six weeks togther.

_

Aaron Carter’s November death was so sudden that it intrigued the Internet. The singer’s passing was among the most Googled in 2022 — the fifth most searched, in fact.

_

The “Grease” star was still the one that we wanted after her death. Interest in Olivia Newton-John spiked in August after her passing, particularly in Australia, Google Trends showed. Hers was the sixth most searched death overall in 2022.

_

British actor Joseph Quinn had a breakout year thanks to his “Stranger Things” role, so Google users were naturally interested in knowing more about him. He was the sixth most searched actor of 2022.

_

Ray Liotta was a goodfella, and that’s why Internet users googled his name after his March death. Ray was the seventh most searched death of the year.

_

The No. 8 most-Googled death was that of Taylor Hawkins. The Foo Fighters drummer was found dead in his hotel room in March. Google interest in Taylor also spiked in September after a tribute concert was performed in his honor in Los Angeles.

_

Ezra Miller’s constant run-ins with the law, especially in the spring, kept Google users curious about them for much of the year. The star was the 10th most searched actor of 2022.

_

Rounding out the top 10 most-searched deaths of 2022 was Ivana Trump, the first ex-wife of former President Donald Trump. Ivana — the mother of Ivanka Trump, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. — died unexpectedly at her New York City home after suffering a fall down her stairs on July 14.
