Vicki Gunvalson on Scandoval: ‘Everybody has an affair… it’s all publicity’

Vicki Gunvalson is one of the original cast members of The Real Housewives of Orange County and as such likes to refer to herself as “the OG of the OC.” She was fired a few years ago, but has returned recently in a “friend of” capacity, a term to which she takes umbrage. But it doesn’t stop her from making those appearances and it also doesn’t stop her from popping up on podcasts and opining about other Bravolebrities like the Vanderpumpers. Vicki thinks Scandoval is all fake, but also, it’s whatever because everyone has affairs. Okay then.

As one of Bravo’s founding Real Housewives, Orange County’s Vicki Gunvalson (aka “the OG of the OC”) knows all about onscreen scandals, drama and outrageous reunion reveals.

So, in the wake of one of reality TV’s biggest talkers in years—the backstabbing affair and emotional fallout that rocked Season 10 of Vanderpump Rules—Gunvalson is putting her knowledge to use and claiming the whole “Scandoval” shocker was just for show.

During a recent visit to Nik Richie’s FACTZ Podcast, the 61-year-old was asked about the VPR shakeup that saw Tom Sandoval cheat on his girlfriend of nine years, Ariana Madix, with her then best friend, Raquel Leviss.

“Everybody has an affair, and I don’t really care,” Gunvalson responded at first. “They weren’t married. They knew what they were getting into.”

She then added, “I think it’s all publicity.”

“You think it’s all staged?” Richie asked.

Gunvalson didn’t hesitate to say, “One hundred percent,” and she grinned and nodded as he summed it up as “all fake” and “just for ratings and numbers.”

Of course, Gunvalson isn’t the only person who’s expressed doubts about the VPR scandal that captivated viewers with sordid details, such as Sandoval and Leviss hooking up in a car as Madix mourned the loss of her dog and, later, hooking up in Madix’s own bed when she was out-of-town for a family funeral. Earlier this month, Madix herself spoke to Glamour and addressed the fact that even some of the show’s fans claimed it was all a lie when responding to her social media posts.

I’ve written about more well-reasoned theories than Vicki’s and said then that I don’t believe it’s fake. Vanderpump Rules has been about cheating since its very first episode, these people are not good enough actors to pull this off, and the minutia of the affair is far too intricate and far too awful for it to be anything but real. I do believe that Tom Sandoval was trying to orchestrate things to a degree, but despite his mustache there is no way that self-involved man would want to appear as villainous as he does now. The dog, the grandma, c’mon! If it were fake he certainly would have drawn the line there. But Vicki probably thinks it’s all fake because she would fake something like that to remain relevant. Perhaps a hint of jealousy at all Ariana Madix’s legitimate opportunities? After all, Vicki said she wouldn’t go back to her show unless it was full time and here we are, “friend of” the Housewives. As for the idea that everyone has affairs and they weren’t married and knew what they were getting into — no, just no. Ariana will definitely be blocking Vicki based on these comments.
