Alan Carr recalls his dad sobbing as he watched him host the Royal Variety show

Alan Carr has recalled the moment his dad burst into tears after watching him host the iconic Royal Variety Performance.

The comedian, 45, has fronted this year's production and his parents couldn't have been more proud of their son.

Back in November, the swanky ceremony was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall, London with many celebrities joining the star-studded line up.

Ed Sheeran, Sir Rod Stewart, Anne-Marie, James Blunt and Years and Years all stepped up to put on exciting performances – with the pre-recorded show finally airing on ITV this weekend.

When thinking back to the presenting gig – which happened last month and included senior members of the Royal family including The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – Alan couldn't help but feel emotional about his dad's reaction.

With his parents Christine and Graham watching from the audience, Alan explained how his dad became emotional when he took to the stage.

He told the Mirror: "My dad was crying because he was so proud which is so sweet."

During the production, Alan even gave his mum and dad a shout out along with a few jibes about his mum's Christmas dinner.

The Chatty Man added: "My mum had never ever been to The Royal Albert Hall. My mum and dad are mentioned in my monologue but had I told her I would be slagging off her Christmas dinner she wouldn’t have turned up.

"She didn't know that the camera would be on her and I kept dropping hints like suggesting she should get her hair done and suggesting she puts some nice jewellery on and telling her you never know who you might meet.

"She did look very glam and I felt very proud of my mum. And my dad had a dickie bow on which was very odd to see. So, I had the pressure of doing the Royal Variety, having The Royals watching me and my mum and dad so yes, I deserved that glass of champagne when I came off stage. It was definitely a night to remember."

Alan also explained that being asked to take on the presenting role of such an honourable production was like a "dream come true" for him.

However it wasn't Alan's first time appearing on the star-studded programme, he'd actually featured on the show twice before.

He added: "I’ve performed on the show twice before, once in Cardiff when it was the first time I’d ever done it and then the second time at the Royal Albert Hall and I was dressed up as Ashleigh, David Walliams was Pudsey the dog."

The Royal Variety Performance airs on ITV and ITV Hub on the 19 December from 7:20pm.
