America drummer Willie Leacox dies after lifelong dedication to music

The drummer of the famous rock band America, Willie Leacox, has sadly died at 74.

The late musician passed away at his home in Stockton, California, it has been revealed.

His bandmates Gerry Beckley, Dan Peek and Dewey Bunnell told him they 'loved' Will, and he was an "integral part of the America family" as they confirmed his passing on social media.

A statement read: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our brother and beloved drummer of 41 years, Willie Leacox. Willie was an integral part of the America family and we cherish the time we shared with him through this crazy journey."

"We send our love to the Leacox family through this difficult time and to all that knew Will. Rest in peace, Will. We love you."

No cause of death has been announced at this time.

The band were responsible for hits such as Horse With No Name, Venture Highway and Sister Golden Hair.

Fans and friends of the drummer have shared their condolences on social media.

The Full House actor John Stamos wrote in the comment section, "Bummer. I loved his drumming. RIP buddy."

A fan tweeted: "RIP Willie that’s a shame I love every song from this band"

The rock band was first formed in 1970 by Dewey, Dan and Gerry.

In the following year they released their first self-titled album which featured hits like A Horse with No Name that peaked at Number 3 in the UK.

Willie joined the band in 1973 replacing drummer David Atwood.

The musician was part of the group for 41 years and remained a member until 2014.

In 2014 the band confirmed his exit in an emotional Facebook post.

It said: "After 41 years of dedicated hard work we want to acknowledge and celebrate the official retirement of our beloved drummer, Willie Leacox

"He has been a uniquely superb drummer throughout those many years and his contributions to our recordings and live show speak for themselves."

The band said that any contributions in honour of Willie can be made to the Leacox Family Music Education Scholarship.
